(Reuters) - In South Carolina, the governor's mansion is on the grounds of a former arsenal that was burned down by the Union army during the Civil War.
These days, that attack in the 1860s seems a metaphor for the besieged tenure of Republican Governor Nikki Haley.
Elected last year as a symbol of the conservative Tea Party's rise in U.S. politics, the embattled Haley has had a rocky transition from government critic to government executive -- and potential player in the 2012 presidential campaign.
Democrats and Republicans alike accuse her of being petty and distant. And some of the Tea Party conservatives who lifted Haley to a surprising victory last year now say she has lost focus on their priorities: reducing government and regulations.

Talked to my brother in SC. He said Haley is depised by republicans in the state. She does not know how to even work with her own party to get things done. Then she goes and endorses Romney. He said she is a one term governor. Said anyone could beat her. Newt Gingrich will win SC. The negative ads against Newt will backfire. Just saw Newt on CNN. He said he was going to start hitting Romney with everything but the kitchen sink!

Forgive me if I don’t join those calling. Gov. Haley a “bitch”, “traitor” or “jackal”. She is fighting to defend the laws she signed cracking down on illegal aliens and mandating photo voter ID, and had to battle Big Sis to be able to mandate E-Verify in S.C. We NEED her to win on these battles, so I am in no hurry to tear her down. I am deeply disappointed in her for her decision. But her success in the areas above is critical to spreading similar laws to N.C. and taking down Bev Purdue this Novemember.
I agre that she screwed up bigtime with that idiotic endorsement of the mittens.What I cant understand is the voter ID being passed and the ban on illegals that was implemented on her watch.I dont get it.
