Pretty, pretty is dying.
People will define pretty differently. For the purposes of this piece, I define pretty as a mutually enriching balanced combination of beauty and projected innocence.
Once upon a time, women wanted to project an innocence. I am not idealizing another age and I have no illusions about the virtues of our grandparents, concupiscence being what it is. But some things were different in the back then. First and foremost, many beautiful women, whatever the state of their souls, still wished to project a public innocence and virtue. And that combination of beauty and innocence is what I define as pretty.
By nature, generally when men see this combination in women it brings out their better qualities, their best in fact. That special combination of beauty and innocence, the pretty inspires men to protect and defend it.
Young women today do not seem to aspire to pretty, they prefer to be regarded as hot. Hotness is something altogether different. When women want to be hot instead of pretty, they must view themselves in a certain way and consequently men view them differently as well.
As I said, pretty inspires mens nobler instincts to protect and defend. Pretty is cherished. Hotness, on the other hand, is a commodity. Its value is temporary and must be used. It is a consumable.

I’m VERY proud to say that my two girls and girl-in-law have all gone for the “pretty” look...naturally, and not the other.
Happy New Years, george76!
I’ve heard Dennis Prager (to paraphrase him) speculate that because of the loss of clear-cut, traditional male/female identities, women resort to openly flaunting their sexuality in order to assert their gender. It makes some sense - if you dress/act/talk like the guys, and they dress/act/talk like you, in order to accentuate your femaleness, you expose more skin and act out provocatively.
Or, something like that.
Great article. My three boys all seem to be attracted to pretty. One just got engaged to a lovely young lady. My other sons’ girlfriends have all been pretty as opposed to hot. They are 19, 22 and 25 years old.
All too true. I never liked the terms sexy, foxy or hot. None of them are respectful of the person. And it doesn’t reflect well on the person using the term either.
As long as there's a God, there'll be pretty.
I should add that when my 19 year old son was 17, he told me he likes girls who are gentle. I will never forget that moment.
Ultimately, “hot” is sort of ugly.
“God made girls to be pretty. Man’s perversion turns God-given beauty into something hideous.”
How do you explain tarts?
Well said. My wife for example, in her mid 40s now, is still very pretty (She is definitely "hot" when she wishes to be). That is one of many reasons I do cherish her.
Happy New Year George!
Celebrity worship, Playboy moral values, drug use, abortion, nihilism....the posturing of young women as being chronically in heat. Welcome to neo pagan America. Decadence and decline.
Everyone loves the innocent Lindsey Lohan who dressed modestly and was beautiful, too. Today she is just another rich, trashy woman that very few would even think about marrying.
Happy New Year Mile Hi
Happy New Years, Brads Gramma
Pretty is alive and well in Asia.
“Celebrity worship, Playboy moral values, drug use, abortion, nihilism....the posturing of young women as being chronically in heat. “
And don’t forget....TATTOOS. What the heck IS it about them? Are tattooed women trying to say, “YEAH! I’m TOUGH!!!!”?

to me, pretty trumps sexy every time...
I agree. We all joke about hot. But innocent beauty is far more appealing.
