York: Romney briefed church on abortion stance
Washington Examiner ^ | 122911 | Byron York

In 1993, Mitt Romney was a successful businessman with an urge to enter public life and a plan to challenge Ted Kennedy for a Senate seat from Massachusetts.

Romney was also a high-ranking official in the Mormon church -- in charge of all church affairs in the Boston area -- with a dilemma over abortion. Romney was personally pro-life, and the church was pro-life, but a majority of the Massachusetts electorate was decidedly pro-choice.

How Romney handled that dilemma is described in a new book, "Mitt Romney: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics," by Boston journalist Ronald Scott. A Mormon who admires Romney but has had his share of disagreements with him, Scott knew Romney from local church matters in the late 1980s.

Scott had worked for Time Inc., and in the fall of 1993, he says, Romney asked him for advice on how to handle various issues the media might pursue in a Senate campaign. Scott gave his advice in a couple of phone conversations and a memo. In the course of the conversations, Scott says, Romney outlined his views on the abortion problem.

According to Scott, Romney revealed that polling from Richard Wirthlin, Ronald Reagan's former pollster whom Romney had hired for the '94 campaign, showed it would be impossible for a pro-life candidate to win statewide office in Massachusetts. In light of that, Romney decided to run as a pro-choice candidate, pledging to support Roe v. Wade, while remaining personally pro-life.

How on EARTH could anyone think it’s a positive thing for a person to be pro-life, but present himself as pro-death for political advantage?? Just another reason to detest that stammering oily-haired sleazebucket.

Thank you for posting that. Another note, the article states that Mitt was a ‘high ranking official’ making it sound more than it was (he was a Stake President). The part you posted mentioned that Wirthlin’s brother and dad were also ‘high ranking officials’, almost putting them in the same level. Wirthlin’s dad (Jospeh B. Wirthlin) wasn’t a “Stake President” but a Member of the LDS council of the 12 Apostles. MUCH Higher than Romney.

Do you consider Northern Virginia to be part of the South? It’s a liberal as Massachusetts.

Hat Tip to...

Appropo phrasing for the

R.I.P. for Ripliancum FREEPER tombstone

Why?

Well, Rip, just hours before his zotting, took umbridge that I had the nerve to cite a Mormon blog seeking to Name the new "Mormon of the Year." See: Nominate the 2011 Mormon of the Year [Harry Reid won award in 2009; Romney won in 2008]

Ripliancum's comment was the first out of the block -- and he claimed I was "dragging...up" some obscure Mormon site. Yet, the sanctioned Mormon church blogger @ Deseret News had twice mentioned "Hat tip to" that Mormon blog site over the past 26 months.

If the sanctioned Mormon church blogger "Hat tips" a Mormon blog site, apparently that was fine & dandy with Ripliancum. As soon as I highlighted that same site, Rip had sudden issues.

Hat tip to those ever-vigilant about Mormonic lies and deceptions!

A FREEPER 'EULOGY' of SORTS FOR RIPLIANCUM

Toward the end of Rip's FREEPER life, his credibility began to deteriorate. He had fallen to new Mormon lows in the past few months when he also tried to deny the plain Mormon teaching by numerous Lds "prophets" that Mormons seek their own planets as gods)

Lessons to be "learned" on Rip's FREEPER life of late:

#1: Although there was plenty to despise about the "Book of Mormon" production on Broadway, the "I Believe" song part of the musical unveiled lyrics about Mormons wanting their own planets. Mormons can't stand too much spoof exposure of their beliefs and will begin to back away from some of the more incredulous parts of them.

#2: Some Mormons, like RIP, do the same thing with Harry Reid politically. Only instead of holding the Mormon church accountable for the platforms it gives to Harry Reid (invited him to speak to all students, faculty October 2007; + he is a sanctioned "home teacher" in the Lds church), Rip (along with other FREEPER Mormons) would take aim at those who unveiled those overt linkages re: Mormons promoting Harry Reid.

To too many Mormons, the problem wasn't Harry Reid himself -- or the Mormon church elevating Harry Reid. The problem was those who exposed such linkages...because, again, Mormons don't want the ridicule baggage that comes along with being an id'd Mormon.

As Harry Reid told the BYU audience, he was a Democrat precisely because he was Mormon!
