The pointlessness of Mitt Romney
Daily Caller ^ | 122911 | Theo Caldwell

“Pointless … like giving caviar to an elephant.” ~ William Faulkner

Leave it to Faulkner to create a simile so apt that it reaches across decades to apply, very neatly, to the futility of foisting Mitt Romney upon the Republican Party as its presidential nominee. The image of the elephant is self-evidently appropriate. As for caviar, despite its association with money and privilege, one wonders who actually enjoys its taste. Truth be told, it is over-rated, as most delicacies are. Caviar is a lot like Marmite, only more expensive and lacking its nutritional value. So it is with Romney, moneyed and privileged, yet without much to recommend him.

Of course, the late Nobel Laureate knew nothing of the former Massachusetts governor, but ’twas always thus with a masterful turn of phrase — it can be wheeled out again and again, pertinent to any number of circumstances.

In this case, nominating Romney to lead the GOP in November, and even electing him president, would be pointless. While a President Romney may slow the country’s deterioration, and may even make good on his pledge to repeal Obamacare (that is, if the Supreme Court doesn’t drive a stake through that vampire-law first), his toothless policy proposals will do no more than delay the inevitable — that is, the end of America as we know it.

If the nominated Mitt would lose to Obama, who is the one that can beat him? It is sounding like if any of the other candidates get the nomination, it will all come down to who the VP selection turns out to be. At that point it might become a fight for the middle and if Obama dumps Biden and puts Hillary on the ticket do his numbers go up with the flexible middle and independents?

We are heading toward the cliff at 200 mph. Romney is satified with slowing to 100 mph. The result will be the same.

Romney is a waste of time and in the end, he will do tremendous damage by discrediting conservatism.

Obama, we can survive. Romney not so much.

We must get a real constitutional conservative/libertarian this time. Romney ain't one.

If I could wave my magic wand, I would love to "take back the republican party." I'd like to see the Tea Party become the guiding political force in our nation. But, I don't see that happening. In hoping will all I have that we can take out Obama, I am looking for the candidate than can sway the media and [hopefully] repel the full wrath of the American media.

In addition to being disagreed with I am now being insulted and called names. So, what are we to do? What is the future plan to deal with this election while we look at the long term process of turning the country in a new direction?

The first step is to make sure Romney DOESN’T get the nomination. People who are willing to roll over and hold their nose and vote for Romney are exactly what the MSM and Romney wants.

We fight tooth and nail. Romney is Obama, he isn’t the lesser of two evils, he is just as evil.

If you want to get rid of Obama and start turning the country in a new direction, then you most definitely do not want to have anything to do with Mitt Romney. Why? Because Mitt Romney is a progressive; he is as much a Republican/conservative as Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of NYC is a Republican/conservative (which is to say, not at all).

To see this all you need to do is consider Romney's actual record when he was governor of Massachusetts. That record is a sorry, dismal affair (if you're a republican/conservative) that belongs to a governor whose sole focus appears to have been the vigorous enforcement of the prevailing liberal laws and policies of Mass and, as a sideshow, the invention of what became Obamacare, including the most noxious aspect of it, the individual mandate. And this cannot be fobbed off as somehow merely being attributable to the rank liberalism of Massachusetts as a whole and Romney's need to go along to get along with that liberalism. Why? Because Romney just very recently reaffirmed his belief that the individual mandate of Romneycare was the right thing to do and was, in his view, based on core conservative principles.

On that score alone, Romney cannot be counted on to do anything other than to vigorously enforce the prevailing set of liberal laws and policies Obama and the democrats have saddled this country with. He certainly cannot be counted on to start moving the country even an iota farther away from the precipice of socialist failure Obama and the democrats have been relentlessly pushing us toward.

Finally, and precisely because Romney accepts, and believes in, so many of the policies and doctrines of the democrats/liberals - as demonstrated by his reaffirmation of the individual mandate in Romneycare/Obamacare - a Romney Presidency would effectively be sold by the left and the MSM as being a "consensus" of the American people that the current direction the democrats/liberals have taken us in is the correct direction most Americans, both liberal and conservative, want this country to move toward. You know, and I know, that this is not true; however, that is precisely what the effect of a Romney Presidency would be.

In other words, not only would a Romney Presidency do nothing to fix the damage the democrats/liberals have inflicted on this country, it would effectively sell us out and lock in the current democrat/liberal political agenda for at least a generation.

Can anyone with even an ounce of common sense or respect for this country want that? Apparently, there are way too many misguided, blinded republicans who do.

As for plans to start moving this country in the right direction? Why not start by working to elect as President the one candidate who actually has a 10-year track record as a reasonably reliable conservative whose administration has done wonders for the economy of the state he has led for those 10 years? I speak of Governor Perry of Texas, of course.

As for beating Obama and proving that Obama's (mal)admininstration has been primarily responsible for the trashing of the American economy, Perry can do that quite handily because, just like Obama, he inherited an economy that had been crafted by GWB and his policies; however, unlike Obama, Perry has managed to help Texans not only keep their economy on an even keel, his policies have helped the Texas economy flourish, even as much of the rest of the country slowly drifts from recession and into depression.

But, if for whatever reason you cannot vote for Perry (for the life of me I really cannot understand why, but so be it), then please, please, please put all of your emphasis and focus on helping republicans/conservatives retain control of the House and get control of the Senate. Controlling Congress is at least as important, if not more important, than regaining the White House because it is Congress, not the President, that makes the law.

Keep in mind that had the republicans had a few more seats in the House, or even a large enough minority in the Senate to reliably filibuster, we almost certainly would not have Obamacare today.

That, I think, is at least the start of a plan to start this country back on the long, long road away from the fatal precipice of democrat/liberal socialism. It won't get us there tomorrow, and it may not be as neat and tidy as the purists want, but each voyage begins with a single step and a Perry Presidency, or at the least republican control of Congress, would be a very good first step on the path back from the brink of failure.

Perry for President in 2012

Romney isn’t swaying the media, the media is swaying you in Romney’s behalf, then they will gut him in front of you if he is nominated.

Newt has already seen the full wrath of the media, Romney is the media’s stalking horse and wait until they reveal the real Mitt to you, you will learn why he has only won one election, and why he didn’t reach 50% in that vote, and why he left that office with 34% approval, was blocked from running for reelection, decimated the state GOP, and after being the 4th GOP Governor in a row, may prove to be the last one they elect for a very long time.

IATZ! lol

Jim, when do you normally take out the $$$ on monthly donors? I've seen it at varying times throughout the month, but I haven't seen my December payment hit yet.

Don't worry...the funds are there. Unlike Harry Reid, I keep a pretty tight budget.

Happy New Year to you!

Remember how uncomfortable the Mittster looked during his interview with Brett Baier? The heat will increase 1000% the day after he locks up the nomination. Bain Capital, Romneycare, flip-floppin, etc. will dominate the airwaves, instead of the economic failures of the current Administration.

no one suggested that Romney is a Christian, he isn't, but I was sarcastically chastising Jim for his harsh(unchristian) retort to another post.

When you find yourself at the bottom of a deep hole, changing shovels while continuing to dig will not help you. You have to stop digging. Mitt Romney is like picking up a new shovel and using it to make the hole even deeper.

I did not attempt to insult you. I just wanted to open your eyes to what Mitt Romney really is because you were misinformed. That is the situation with Romney in a nutshell. He is purposely trying to misrepresent himself. He has purposely used his wealth to purchase political connections and power. He uses that power in ways the Constitution was never allowed. There really is little difference between him and Obama. But just as Obama was able to pull the wool over some people’s eyes, Mitt wants to pull the wool over your eyes.

Some of us knew about Obama and we know about Mitt as well. Don’t let yourself be fooled. Voting for Romney is like voting for Obama. We have to make a stand somewhere. We have to stop digging.

"But just as Obama was able to pull the wool over some people’s eyes, Mitt wants to pull the wool over your eyes."

...and Newt wants to pull the wool over my eyes
...and Michele Bachmann reminds too many men of their ex-wife when she goes on the attack
...and Santorum, (who I align with on almost every issue) is too far right to get any widespread support in the middle
...and Perry would be a disaster in a debate with the community organizer
... and Huntsman didn't even get invited to the dance
... and the old doctor is half crazy half the time

...so now what?

You can’t get any further left than Obama. Why is it the liberals never have to worry about gaining widespread support in the middle? Stop worrying about digging a deeper hole. Stop listening to the media. You say you align with Santorum. He is a conservative so support him.

I do and I've sent what I can afford - so what? He will be gone in a month and we'll all throw rocks at each other. We are down to two choices: Romney who is considered a RINO of the worst order because he {maybe] learned from his constituents and alerted his views
...and Newt who is a political insider and supporter of the globalist agenda.

So tell me - a guy who simply believes in life, liberty and my right to own property (not slaves)- where am I supposed to go to defend what I believe in when my first choice falls away?

If people would stop supporting RINOs out of the fear that the RINOs, their backers and the media stir up, you would not have this problem. Fear of a candidate not having enough moderate aka/socialist support is not a valid reason to reject a conservative. Do what is right. Support the conservative candidate and let God sort out the rest.

Don’t turn to the most liberal candidates in the race and say, let’s support them because they can win moderate support. That is precisely what happened in 2008 with McCain. Observe, there is no President McCain.

We will never win by digging deeper. There is no help for us as long as we keep digging that hole. Supporting RINOs is digging deeper. Just stop.

"If people would stop supporting RINOs ..."

Wouldn't that be great? The problem is that it isn't reality. The middle of America is who decides elections and they need to see an engaging conservative in order to begin to change their minds.

All things being perfect, or correct, we would have a leader emerge who can walk tall and inspire the people to follow and support him. But all things are not correct. That is why the country has [over the years] allowed our congress and justice departments to devolve into cesspools of political corruption.

Our current crop of 'leaders' have come up through this system and it is all they know. Deal making, bribes, self interest and legal embezzlement are the pillars of the modern politician. As the song says, "when you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything".Maybe the young and untarnished stars like Marco Rubio and Mike Lee will stay true to their values and someday lead us from the darkness. Until then, I think we have to be smart enough to understand that today's objective must be to send Obama and his cadre of thugs back to the snake pit in Chicago. Then we can focus on moving further back toward pride and morality. But, I don't think we can fix everything in one jump.

With any luck this election cycle will become a referendum against both Obama and the communist fifth column in the media. And with any luck the republicans will not set conservatism back with highly visible nastiness like many are displaying on this website. That would only serve to further alienate the middle that decides America's elections.

You’ve been brainwashed. Remember the same talk was going around in 2008. That is why McCain was chosen. A lot of good that did. Stop listening to the media and you will be able to accomplish something.

They’ve got you where they want you — twisting in fear in your own mind, so scared that supporting the conservative candidate will fail, you refuse to act in your and the nation’s best interest. Well so far as I know, the last time the far out of the mainstream conservative was the nominee, we won by a landslide and every single time since “conventional wisdom” and the “moderate candidate” was followed, the RINO lost.

Wake up! Do what is right! Let the Lord handle the rest.
