Thomas Sowell: Gingrich for president
Hot Air ^ | DECEMBER 27, 2011 | ALLAHPUNDIT

A grudging endorsement, but sufficiently esteemed that it deserves a little publicity.

The fact that each of the short-lived front-runners in the Republican field gained that position by presenting themselves as staunch conservatives suggests that Republican voters may have been trying to avoid having to accept Mitt Romney, whose record as governor of Massachusetts produced nothing that would be regarded as a serious conservative achievement.

Romney’s own talking point that he has been a successful businessman is no reason to put him into a political office, however much it may be a reason for him to become a successful businessman again…

Much depends on whether you think the voting public is going to be more interested in Newt Gingrich’s personal past than in the country’s future. Most of the things for which Gingrich has been criticized are things he did either in his personal life or when he was out of office. But, if we are serious, we are more concerned with his ability to perform when in office…

Below the Sowell column is an ad for that Maoist Grandmother for MA Senate, Elizabeth Warren. What a shrew.

Anyway, I think Newt may the man for our times. We cannot survive another four years of Hussein nor, and almost as bad, a placeholder pubbie President.

Gingrich is getting the endorsements from *real* conservatives, unlike Romney.

Gingrich has balls, unlike too many neutered Republicans

My opinion of T. sowell just dropped 50 points. Newt is a cheater, anyone that can’t figure out that a man convicted by the house of money laundering or that his mistresses out number the conservatives in congress is kidding themselves. Lying and cheating, thinking you are Winston Churchill or Abe Lincoln is the sign of a flawed individual, not signs of leadership skills./rant off - we need better candidates not guys tapping their toes in bathrooms, chasing dollars behind our backs.

As I have said many times, I will let God pass judgment on Newt's sins. I will pass judgment on his policy positions and his ability to turn our country around. Given the mess our country is in, to vote against Newt for his past, is a vote against my kids' future. Newt has my vote.

Wow! I guess I have to rethink my entire view of the intellectual order of the universe! </sarcasm>
thinking you are Winston Churchill or Abe Lincoln is the sign of a flawed individual, not signs of leadership skills.
Thinking that you have a leadership function is a sign of maturity, because we all do affect the culture. I would be far more impressed if Newt were Sarah Palin, but Sarah Palin announced out. And unless you put forward someone with her charisma and moral values and leadership qualities, I think we have to take a clear view of the actual choices in front of us.
We would do best to draft Palin, but the unity to do that doesn't seem to exist. So we either write her in as a protest vote, or we choose the lesser evil. Knowing that will not always be comfortable living with whatever choice we make.

Surely it counts for something that Mitt only has one wife and, by Christian standards, Newt has more. OTOH, by the standards of Mormonism Newt should have just married all three of them without bothering to divorce the first two. So there you are.

see if this rings a bell.. Eighty-four ethics charges were filed against Speaker Gingrich during his term. After extensive investigation and negotiation by the House Ethics Committee, Gingrich was sanctioned US$300,000 by a 395-28 House vote. It was the first time in history a speaker was disciplined for ethical wrongdoing.

Maybe some of the votes where made by a few of the republican members of the house who thought NEWT may have done something wrong. I think much of it was a crappy witch hunt, but he did not pay 300K because he was innocent.

I am not sure why you bring up one wife vs. many for a Morman, much of that went away 100 years ago - in order for the state to join the union. As for leadership wanting something being Abe or Winston, that is certainly fine for a young man to dream not for a "leader who has been disgraced by his ethics in leadership and personal life."

Yes I would like someone as dynamic as Sarah, but I will accept someone with some verbal flaws over a man who has a history of cheating...it does not wash off - as we said during Klinton - character matters.
