Too bad it had to be Meryl Streep portraying her.

Streep was one of the Hollywood airheads who testified before Congress about farming because she had played a farmer's wife once, wasn't she?

Our executive editor, Andy Howell, told me that Comedy Central satirist Stephen Colbert plans to testify Friday at a U.S. House Judiciary subcommittee on immigration. Colbert, it seems, spent one day picking crops as part of a United Farm Workers publicity effort daring Americans citizens to work in the fields. There’s never a shortage of celebrities hiking to Capitol Hill. Alan Alda, who played a doctor on “MASH,” played doctor again in a congressional hearing. Meryl Streep, wanting to be relevant, testified in Congress against a pesticide, alar, used on apples. Alar was eventually banned, despite that humans would have to drink 4,000 gallons of apple juice connected to alar every day for a lifetime to have any risk of cancer.

Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek and Jane Fonda are scheduled to testify Monday before the House Democrats' farm task force on the emotional toll of the financial stress experienced by farm families--something akin to their roles in "Country," "The River" and "The Dollmaker," respectively.

But it's probably safe to assume Meryl Streep is an airhead.
