There's just about a week to go before the crucial Iowa caucus. Predictably, the lead is see-sawing back and forth between former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul whoup to this pointmost everyone but his most loyal supporters have treated as something of a gadfly rather than a serious candidate.
Now that he is flirting with front-runner status, Paul's record is coming under closer scrutiny. He's getting hit pretty hard for some of the positions he's taken, some of the votes he's cast in Congress and some of the opinions which have appeared under his name. This, of course, makes his most loyal supporters angry but the renewed attention is long overdue as many of Paul's positions are well outside the mainstream of American political thought. To some, it is this very fact that provides Paul with his strongest appeal. He is certainly not a "business as usual" kind of guy but is that alone enough to recommend him for the job of president of the United States? Those who know him best are divided on the subject.

Those who know him best..Stormfront, Hamas and 9/11 truthers?
Can’t help but notice that your average Ron Paul supporter sounds more like a CODE PINKER then they do a Republican or a Conservative. Watch what happens when any criticism surfaces of Ron Paul, you are immediately dubbed a Neo Con. Regardless of what Paul’s Code Pinkers and Libertarian supporters say, Paul’s world view and feelings about America is full tilt crackpot. He may be a radical departure from the status quo but In “Ron Paul World”, America is the root of all evil. His intention is to take us back to a pre world war II America in which Fascism, Imperialism and Communism were allowed to run rampant only sucking us in anyway leading to an even greater amount of death and destruction. If Ron Paul has his way, he’d let those forces run loose again including allowing Islamism to destroy Israel and to wreak havoc on western societies . How the hell is this guy doing so well in the Republican primary? The answer is simple, his support comes from Code Pinkers and other left wing zealots intent on screwing up this election in favor of the Democrats.
"Among his observations:Yep sounds like the Ron Paul we have seen in the debates and over the past 20 years. A hater's hater. An unaccomplished 12-term Congressman who is the pork king of the House and who not only tolerates racism, but writes about it and accepts donations from overtly racists groups.
- "He is what I would describe as 'out of touch,' with both Hispanic and Black culture. Ron is far from being the hippest guy around. He is completely clueless when it comes to Hispanic and Black culture, particularly Mexican-American culture. And he is most certainly intolerant of Spanish and those who speak strictly Spanish in his presence
- "He is however, most certainly Anti-Israel, and Anti-Israeli in general. He wishes the Israeli state did not exist at all. He expressed this to me numerous times in our private conversations. His view is that Israel is more trouble than it is worth, specifically to the America taxpayer. He sides with the Palestinians, and supports their calls for the abolishment of the Jewish state, and the return of Israel, all of it, to the Arabs
- "Ron Paul is most assuredly an isolationist. He denies this charge vociferously. But I can tell you straight out, I had countless arguments/discussions with him over his personal views. For example, he strenuously does not believe the United States had any business getting involved in fighting Hitler in WWII. He expressed to me countless times, that 'saving the Jews,' was absolutely none of our business. When pressed, he oftentimes brings up conspiracy theories like FDR knew about the attacks of Pearl Harbor weeks beforehand, or that WWII was just 'blowback,' for Woodrow Wilson's foreign policy errors, and such."
It's about time the facts get out about this dangerous man.
Romney and the establishment want Paul to come in first in Iowa, Mitt second and on to the NH where Mitt comes in first.....
Paul is the perfect foil for the establishment types and Mitt, otherwise, Mitt would have to compete with a genuine conservative in a head-to-head battle.
Now that would scare the Beelzebub out of DC!
On youtube there will be a ton of profanity laced invective hurled at you.
If people want to see Obama get re-elected, keep supporting Ron Paul.
Post five rings true. Put up Ron Paul as the “conservative’ for Romney to debate and knock down. Paul is a libertarian and though he has some positions similar to conservatives, is not representative of conservatives or the TEA Party movement. But, by knocking down Paul, the RINO party can say it saved the USA from we conservatives. Either way, Obama beats Romney in 11/2012 and the USA goes farther down the drain.
Because Republicans let him. Again and again, he has used the Repub primary process as a forum for his VERY anti-Republican stances.
In return, one would expect that Ron Paul would show at least a modicum of respect or loyalty to the Party that gives him that forum. The fact that he never has should be open-and-shut denial of the same platform ever again. But no. He gets to do it every single election cycle. And he becomes a canker sore on the effort.
I think his original impetus for doing what he does, though quixotic, is to somehow direct the conversation back toward the Constitution -- admirable. But in the end, his pied-piperesque, idiosynchratic tiltings are held out as a kind of extortion: respect us, or we go away mad and take our sympathizers out of the picture in ways that will help the Democrats.
Why do we always get snookered this way?
Like you, I am mystified.
You gave a spot on, well put summary of Ron Paul (pot).
Great summary.
I swear there needs to be a Ron Paul Truth File here. Who knows how many Iowans comes to FreeRepublic and want information about this guy.
The Republicans are letting him stay in — none of them want to call him a loon and risk having him go for a Third Party effort. Recall what trouble Ralph Nader was for the Dems, in draining off just a few percent from various states. The longer Paul stays in, the harder it will be for him to qualify or gain traction for a Third Party run...
