n a sign that he's formally backing off his pledge to avoid negative politics, Newt Gingrich is taking direct aim at Mitt Romney.
Gingrich's campaign, urgently in need of recapturing their momentum from earlier this month, is putting out a statement mocking a new Romney ad, in which the former Massachusetts governor portrays himself as a "conservative businessman."
Can we trust a Massachusetts Moderate to enact a conservative agenda?" says Gingrich communications director Joe DeSantis. "Our campaign might have plenty of things to say about that, but the best response certainly comes from Mitt Romney himself: 'I think people recognize that I am not a partisan Republican. That I'm someone who is moderate, and that my views are progressive.'"
That quote comes from 2002 when Romney was running for governor of the Bay State and doing everything he could to downplay his party label and appeal to independent voters.
Included with DeSantis's statement are a slew of past Romney quotes in which he similarly says things that are unhelpful in the context of a GOP presidential primary.
While many of the quotes aren't new, the combination of a spokesman launching a conventional attack and sending along oppo is certainly novel for Gingrich. He has thrown elbows at Romney in the past, but it was usually a spur-of-the moment move and it came only from the candidate's mouth. This is a different thing - a planned assault.

Time for the gloves to come off!
>> Newt Gingrich is taking direct aim at Mitt Romney.
Sadly, he doesn’t have much choice.
Oh well... hope Gingrich kicks the stuffing out of Myth.
He otta. The slander machine’s already on his first divorce, in a way they never looked into Barack Obamas past.

Newt is a fighter. GO NEWT! He will not be afraid to go after Obama with the same force. Romney will be just another McCain as he proved on Fox News when he had the opportunity to go after Obama but declined to do so.
How is using a candidate's own video and his own words negative?
Was the film clip distorted or edited to change the meaning?
If it was just a clip of mittens, its OK.
Sure... but the old adage... If a tree falls in the woods, and there is nobody there, does it make a noise?
Any ads going to hit the air? Last report that I’ve heard, Newt’s brought in over $10 million in this quarter. Seems like some spending might be worthy...
Commenting on someone’s record is now an attack???
And it is a lie that Willard portrays himself conservative. He’s anything bu.
Good question BUT.....
Can “we” trust a proud progressive to adopt a conservative agenda.. (meaning Noot)..
IF nOOt were smart he would put the kibash on the proud progressive stuff..
ftw.
He must mock the opposition in a way never tried before.
The "Hail Mary" pass is overdue!
Newt Ping!
Romney takes his first jab from Newt! Hopefully, commercials are on the way!
Gallup still has Newt steady in first place today at 26%!!! Newt still leads in GA and FL (two VERY important states) by large margins!
Newt holds a steady lead!
Newt just has to hang on until the bottom tier falls off, and his numbers will rise again.
Click on the politico site, scroll down and add your 2 cents worth to the Newt attackers. I just did. It only takes a minute and helps get the message out.
It’s the right thing to do, and it shows that Gingrich will say anything to anybody to get a political advantage, and you can’t trust him to tell you the truth.
It’s not MY fault that he promised to do something stupid. It’s smart of him to break that promise. But George Bush thought it was a good thing to break his pledge not to raise taxes.
And Gingrich thought it was a good thing to break his vow to love, honor, and cherish for as long as we both shall live — twice. He shouldn’t have promised not to run negative ads. Now he has to admit he lied about it.
Go Newt! You have nothing to lose now that your targeted for Borking! Everything you have ever done will be dragged out to make you look like a Corrupt rascal with an over active sex drive. When the MSM is done with you—you will be lucky to not be in prison—all the while they protect and mollycoddle Obama and his mysterious (perhaps criminal) past. Fight on Newt—you will get trashed and will be brought down, but go out with a fight! Remember God loves those who try—
Thank you Titians for keeping us up to date...a quick FR check as off to another family Christmas...So g;lad Newt continues to hold his own..steady as it goes!
Go Newt Go!!!!!!!
