Russian subs to get advanced missiles
Supremacy at sea has always been a fashion. Almost all countries are either building new submarines or modernizing their underwater fleets. For one, Australia and Canada have thought of strengthening and expanding their navies. Russia is also strengthening the combat capacity of its submarines.
The Australian and Canadian governments are planning to buy nuclear-powered submarines. The strengthening of the Chinese Navy in the Pacific worries Australia. Canadas plan to buy nuclear-powered submarines broaches Russias interests since the move might upset the balance in the Arctic.
Russia is not staying idle against the background of the given tendencies. Russia should revamp its submarine fleet to preserve the capabilities of its navy in aggregating with the planned strengthening of the Russian military presence in the Arctic. This means, it will not only build new submarines but also modernize the old ones.
One of the most famous and powerful Russian submarines, nuclear powered ones built under the 949A Antei project will be modernized and equipped with advanced weapons. At present these vessels are equipped with P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles. In the future, the submarines will be equipped with universal systems capable of launching several types of missiles. In this case, the most powerful anti-ship missile will be the P-800 "Oniks" capable of hitting a target at 300 kilometers distance. Its range is significantly less than that of Granits which can reach up to 550-625 kilometers. However, its incorrect to interpret that the replacement "Oniks" with Granits will lessen the capabilities of Antei submarines.
The comparison between Oniks and Granit missiles is not limited to their ranges. With the increase of the range, the weight of both the warhead and the missile increases sharply. This will prompt to reduce the number of missiles in the ammunition load. The huge submarines of the 949A project Antei carry no more than 24 Granit missiles. At the same time, the reliability of hitting the target demands an increase in the number of salvo missiles to upgrade the probability of penetrating the enemy air defence.
When the Granits are replaced with Oniks and the use of universal launching systems, the Antei submarines might carry 72 missiles and it will be no easy task to intercept them. Moreover, Oniks missiles are less visible than Granits owing to their smaller size, and moreover, radars intercept them with difficulties.
Significant advantages of the Oniks are their greater speed at low altitudes, maneuverability and the capability of the targeting system to overcome jamming.
Its worth mentioning that when the Antei submarines are equipped with Oniks missiles they will get universal launching systems. This makes the submarine a universal vessel capable of hitting various targets using various types of missiles.
These systems can also launch the Kaliber missiles or its export version Klab and strategic Granat cruise missiles. Moreover, the submarines will preserve their 533mm and 650mm torpedoes and various kinds of mine and torpedo weapons.
Apart from the modernization of the weapon systems, the equipment of the submarines will be upgraded to reduce the noise level. After the submarines are repaired they can be used for another 15-20 years.
More toys to pick up off the ocean floor for study.
Russian fashion has never been a world leader.
Russia has always had a second rate Navy.
Hope they operate better than there rockets.
Hope they operate better than there rockets.
“..Is Obama giving them to the Russians. At least Clinton got paid for the missile technology he sold the Chinese..”
:::::::::::::
You may have a point here. He would probably do ANYTHING to America to gain favor with Putin, et al. And a billion in campaign bucks has got to be paid back somehow....always amazes me how Clinton “bought” his way out of ChinaGate.
Ever notice state-controlled media in other countries, actually want their country to be strong.
Maybe we could trade media.
What is it with americans that love electing treasonous bastards to federal office..?
Could be being treasonous is now “the Rage”.. and is fashionable..
Coming from a selfish and pampered generation.. pity..
Ever notice how our media wish those with state controlled media to have a strong military? As if only the US being strong is somehow bad in and of itself, and we need them to counter our strength?
State controlled media may be a propaganda machine, but our media is also a propaganda machine for them as well.

The 949A Antei project is better known here as the Oscar II class SSGN, P-700 Granit as the SS-N-19 Shipwreck missile and P-800 Oniks as SS-N-26.
The P-800 and the other missiles mentioned here are have been around for at least 15-20 years.
