Their politically correct holiday card was ridiculed for avoiding the Christmas theme altogether. But the President and First Lady have finally acknowledged the religious origins of the festival. Giving his weekly address from Hawaii where the first family are on holiday, the President was joined by Michelle Obama, as the couple wished America a Happy Christmas. The Obamas were last week mocked for having sent out a Christmas card, featuring their dog Bo, containing no discernible mention of Christmas itself. They also sent out a secular card in 2009. But sitting next to her husband the

I don't know if this is some innocent "classic," but is sounded very much like "Barney" doing a Christmas record. It was creepy, really.
The song is about 60 years old. Bing was the first to sing it I think.
that kinda makes it all the more creepy, actually. the demon seeds of political correctness must have been around since long before bill clinton.
The song was intended to be sung at new years. Somehow it ended up being thrown in with the Christmas music possibly because the other song from the sound tract that ended up being very popular was "White Christmas".
The film is "Holiday Inn". If you can watch it, it is a fun movie.
I think you're right. Back in those days, when it wasn't criminal to believe God, there were no mass media mechanisms for secularizing everything, and therefore there was such a thing as true innocence.
But hearing those words today, in the context of today, is a whole different animal.
I do believe one has to incorporate the intent of the artist in his interpretation of the work, and I trust the artist was not some drooling, obsessive atheist. However, invoking the "if martians came to earth today and saw this" argument, it was a disconcerting moment. Again, like "Barney".
Well, it was an Irving Berlin work. Berlin respected Christian holidays, but did not observe that religion. (But again, he gave us “God Bless America.”) That explains the unique perspective. Yes, it was a New Year’s Day song (according to the Christian calendar).
If you go back and look at old (pre WWI) seasonal greetings, cards etc, Happy Holiday was used quite a lot. Of course, the point is there was no censoring of Christmas so saying Happy Holiday was of course quite innocuous.
I forgot to mention that it was sung by Barry Manilow. Perhaps the hollow, empty quality I heard was lent to it by that cavernous schnozz of his.
My time machine's in the shop.
Manilow would be wasted on Christmas carols. They would sound either overdone or insincere.
you mean they'd be wasted on him, don't you?
They would sound either overdone or insincere.
Or both.
My point being there’s nothing “anti Christmas” about season’s greetings or happy holidays *unless* that’s all you are supposed/allowed to say.
I’m hip to your lip there, homey.
