Am I the only one who thinks that the coverage of this payroll tax extension was such that there was NO WAY THE REPUBLICANS could come out on top of this?

No, you are not.

And am I the only one who's asking why did the Senate pass a bill with only a two-month extension -- which turned out to be totally unworkable, anyway?

What was the purpose of that?

And why did Mitch McConnell and the GOP Senate support it?

The House's position was totally defensible. They had passed a 12-month extension. Whereupon, they should've gone home -- leaving it to the Senate to pass the House bill...or be blamed for not passing the extension.

Conclusion: The GOP Senate helped create the problem. The GOP House then didn't handle the resultant situation well.
