Connecticut independent Sen. Joe Lieberman has directed the staff of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, which he chairs, to examine miscommunication between law enforcement agencies related to the Justice Departments Operation Fast and Furious.
A spokesperson told The Daily Caller Wednesday that Lieberman believe[s] that the lack of interagency coordination along the border merits further examination, and as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, he has directed his staff to follow up with the relevant federal agencies on that topic.
Fast and Furious was a program of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, overseen by Holders DOJ. It sent thousands of weapons to Mexican drug cartels via straw purchasers people who legally purchase guns in the United States with the known intention of illegally trafficking them somewhere else.
At least 300 people in Mexico were killed with Fast and Furious weapons, as was Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. The identities of the Mexican victims are unknown.
Some reports suggest that the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were also involved in some manner or another with the operation.
For instance, Pajamas Media reported that the night Terry was killed, an FBI informant was in the drug cartel rip crew that used Fast and Furious weapons to murder him. Rip crews are armed groups of bandits who work for specific drug cartels and try to rob rival cartel shipments and illegal immigrants as theyre crossing the border.
Pajamas reports that the DEA also had some knowledge of that drug cartel rip crews whereabouts. Assuming the reports are true, the DEA and the FBI failed to deconflict, or warn other agencies including the Border Patrol about potentially deadly risks.
With Liebermans committee now examining Fast and Furious details, that means two Senate committees are probing the matter the homeland security committee and the judiciary committee.
On the House side, the oversight and judiciary committees are investigating the DOJs role in Fast and Furious and the homeland security committees subcommittee on oversight has launched an investigation into the Department of Homeland Securitys role in Fast and Furious, a spokesperson for subcommittee chairman and Texas Rep. Michael McCaul confirmed for TheDC.
Sixty-one congressmen, two U.S. senators and two sitting governors have called for Attorney General Eric Holders resignation over Fast and Furious. Lieberman has not called on Holder to resign.

*Correction: This story originally described Liebermans interest in Fast and Furious as an investigation. While Lieberman has directed his staff to follow up with relevant agencies on the topic, his committee is not conducting an official investigation. We regret the error.
Sen. Lieberman has an entirely unearned reputation as a fellow who just might put country above party.
Fuggetaboutit. He is a hardened partisan Democrat who uses the "nice-guy" gambit to garner the votes of gullible CT RINOs who vote for the SOB in droves. He'll do whatever The Mombasa MF tells tells him to do.
"Miscommunication?" Fast and Furious was a sting operation intended to give the gun-grabbers (like Lieberman) cover. It's too damn bad the Republicans are too stupid to use this issue. Hell, they're even afraid to mention it.
Looks like the horror film "Obama... The Sequel" is already in production and comiong to a theater near you very soon.
Lieberman has had feet of clay all his life. Couldn’t even be a successful Democrat. Don’t know what his end game is here, but I am thankful that he’s going to retire!
Thanks for your pov, others have differing ones. I guess we’ll just have to see. Many people are also crtiticizing Issa and Grassley for not moving fast enough but I think they’re doing a fantastic job.
I don’t know enough about Leiberman to have a clue whether he’s really being a mensch at this point or a usual liberal. We will see.
This is what I don’t get .There has to be 50 issues that the GOP can use ot tear into the Dems BIG BIG BIG Time ..and they dont do i t. Why isn’t the GOP holding press conferences EVERY DAMN day calling for Holders ouster
Why are they not out there telling the whole universe about the dirty details of Solindra? Do they think the new will do that ?I don’t get it . More and more I’m starting to believe Savage that they are 2 faces of the same party ..I swear it seems like it t. Where are the Tea Party candidates? Am I missing something here? I hear nothing about these major scandals except for Levin , Savage or the internet ( FR mostly )
Repubs should be on this 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Press conferences followed by press conferences, force the MSM to cover by making some noise damn it.
