Worst thing about Geldof was he portrayed himself as a samaritan, but was po'ed he didn't win the Nobel Peace Prize for the effort.
Paul McCartneys Wonderful Christmas Time is more annoying than the most annoying commercial jingle ever.
Tough for me to decide which songs are best though. Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels, Joy to the World. So many good ones.
Sounds like a department store commercial.
Most modern Christmas songs are annoying at best. Oddly, though, I find “The Little Drummer Boy” and “Do You See What I See?”, or whatever the name is, to be the most grating when I’m forced to hear them in stores.
Probably my favorite of the moderns is Harry Connick, Jr. and “Big Red Hat” — possibly only because it doesn’t get played very often.
My fave is “O Holy Night.” I also tend to prefer religious Christmas music to its secular counterpart.
I throw up in my mouth every time I hear Paul McCartney’s “Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time.” Ditto for “Last Christmas.”
How about that ancient English carol” “A Boar’s Head in Hand bear I?”
Couple of the Best:
Mannheim Steamroller - The Holly and the Ivy
Donny Osmond - Solder's King
We really need to be sensitive and politically correct this time of year. Our songs shouldn’t include any references to Christ, because religion is divisive. In fact, we shouldn’t make any sort of value judgements, so no mention of good or evil. And we certainly don’t want anything that will reinforce the phallocentric patriarchy. And come to think of it, we shouldn’t mention levity at all, because how can we be happy when the transgendered are being opressed?
So, let’s all join in a rousing chorus of “Good Christian Men, Rejoice”!!
Merry Christmas to one and all!
” Happy Xmas “ by John Lennon.
So this is Christmas and what have you done? Stuff it hippie. What have YOU done?
**** How about that ancient English carol A Boars Head in Hand bear I? ****
That thar is funny, I don’t care who you are.
One of the best songs from one of the least likely sources ever, it was on the top of the British charts for 5 weeks in 1973 and has reentered at least 7 times since.
Worst: Grandma got run over by a Reindeer
The “TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS”
Thanks for that insight. After listening it is patently obvious it was hijacked. I could not understand why I loved the melody and HATED the lyrics. Now I understand.
You Re right: do they know it’s Christmas has got to be the worst.
To me, as a Jewish person, the most beautiful Christmas song is “O Holy Night.”. It’s not my theology but it’s so meaningful and beautiful and emotional. I get chills.
I love many Christmas songs. Even some of the cute secular ones. I love the season and songs and goodies and movies and decorations.
And yes, there are some really meaningful and beautiful Chsnukah songs too. It’s not only Dreidel Dreidel. Lol. “rock of ages” is beautiful, especially sung in 3 languages by shaky old voices. :). “And Thy word... Broke their swords... When our own strength failed us.”
That’s also another one of my favorites. I have a few, but Mary Did You Know still tops #1!
My favorite version of “12 Days” is Gary Hoey’s instrumental rendition of it.
I also like the Bob & Doug McKenzie version, and Jeff Foxworthy’s “Redneck 12 Days of Christmas.”
Another favorite of mine!
