Gingrich (31%) still far ahead in S.C.; Romney (19%) largely unhelped by Haley

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich still smashes his GOP presidential rivals in South Carolina, while his closest but still distant rival Mitt Romney received only a 4-point lift after an endorsement from S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley.

A survey conducted Sunday evening by InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research found support for Gingrich dropped from 38 percent at the end of November to nearly 31 percent among likely South Carolina Republican primary voters. Romney rose slightly from 15 percent to 19 percent.

InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery said the race in South Carolina should have gotten closer, but it remains a state where he predicts Gingrich will pick up his first victory and be well positioned to win Florida’s GOP presidential primary.

“I thought South Carolina would have been a real problem for Gingrich,” said Towery.

“But in reality, what I see here is the fact that Romney got the endorsement from the governor but got virtually nothing from it.”

Towery said Haley should have kept a lower profile in the Republican primary process.

“She made such a big deal out of this by having everyone stay at the governor’s mansion, almost like an interview. It makes her look a little silly,” added Towery.

“If I’d been advising her, I’d say, ‘don’t do this. You’re building yourself up as if you’re a kingmaker.”

Haley’s own low approval rating in South Carolina also didn’t help, he said.

The Sunday evening survey targeted 736 registered voters who will be participating in South Carolina’s Jan. 21 Republican presidential primary. The group had 538 Republicans, 158 Independents and 40 Democrats. The poll had a 3 percent margin of error.

Towery said Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, needed more than the weak bump reflected in Sunday’s poll.

“If this thing was really going to work, he should have shot up...

On FOX tonight, Romney would not call Obama a socialist. (pandering). He is no fighting conservative. He is trying to play both sides....

The Nikki Haley endorsement backfired. It would’ve been gold for Newt, but Milt? Not so much...

Just what i needed to hear.
Iowa has a lot of Newt folks freaking out.

An aside: It is such a pain to learn that not a single
person on FOX has a clue what Newt is talking about in regards
to the activist judges.

Haley should keep busy and focus on her State until the primaries are over.

Romney probably made her an offer she couldn’t refuse. He is the chosen one according to the gop establishment and media. When he loses ...she will look like a fool. She placed all her bets on the wrong horse in this race.

None of these polls mean anything until after IA and NH. SO much depends on those two. If Newt wins IA he’ll be in great shape in SC> But if he finishes 3rd or 4th in IA then what he’s doing now in SC won’t matter.

Also, someone like Perry could shoot way back up in SC if they were to win in IA.

Fortunately, there’s only 2 weeks left. We’re finally getting closer to showtime.

I had a girl do that to me in high school. Invited me to the dance (sadi hawkins?) and vanished 3 or 4 songs in..

I hear she walked home. Lord knows she didn’t get back in my truck!

GOP showtime, that is.

I’m pretty torn. I’m almost willing to take a poison pill to kill the GOP establishment ( we need to take the Senate and keep the House). Otherwise, its just a matter of fast demise, or rapid demise.

I say this as a ‘92 Perot voter.

Is it better to fall on your sword at some point? The GOP establishment has not gotten it yet.

I agree and when these politicians suck up to the establishment types that could be their own un-doing. The establishment Republicans are in the cross hairs just like the Demonrats are. I wish she hadn’t done that but she’s no different than the Pub’s we’re all sick of.....she just proved it. “You play or you’ll pay”.......sheesh!

The only purpose IA and NH serve is to ‘winnow out’ some candidates. NH used to be more significant; IA has a horrible track record on picking winners. The leaders/well funded candidates can stay in thru SC/FL where the primaries are more significant for the GOP candidates.

My husband, DrO, watches BOR, whereas I do not, but tonight I could hear him swearing at the TV so I went into the TV room see what was going on.

BOR was interviewing Romney and DrO hadn't seen “Romney the slimebag politician” answer the abortion question before. He first tried to call him “disingenuous and deceitful,” but ended up called him a filthy lying fsob.

ahaha. I LOVE that Romney, on O’Reilly tonight, said Newt wouldn’t win the Tea Party straw poll - (23,000 on conference call) - and right after that - Gingrich won over Romney 31 to 20...

http://thepresidency.us/2011/12/trending-gingrich-wins-tea-party-patriots-straw-poll/

That seems to be a pretty steady spread. I suspect these other polls are push-polls to try to swing people away from Newt.

This other call-in poll with 250,000 voting - a quarter million! - Newt won 36.5 to Romney 18.8 and Bachmann 17.7.

http://www.streetinsider.com/Press+Releases/Townhall+and+HotAir+Announce+Results+of+National+GOP+Primary/7028870.html

They like to say “these aren’t ‘scientific” polls. Maybe not, but they are REAL. Real people who are involved enough to listen and to call in means they’re ‘likely voters”, n’cest pas?

Anyone here who remembers the call-in poll for Reagan about a week before the election? the ‘scientific’ polls and the media all had him losing 2 to 1.

Millions called in - it went 2 to 1 - for Reagan - and that is EXACTLY how the election went.

So I take heart with these ‘people’ votes.

The Establishment must be in their cups tonight.

But this makes two “people poles’ now that New has won, big.

Take hear! Trust in God.

“The Nikki Haley endorsement backfired”

And I hope it backfired so much that the TEA Party gets her unelected next time around—an ungrateful little wench.
