A. Demand that school staff be trained in the Heimlich Maneuver or
B. Call for a ban on meatballs.
I’m betting on B.
Even if they didn’t know the Heimlich Maneuver, they must have known how to slap him on the back, which might have helped. Sadly, they were probably so afraid that if they tried that they would be arrested for assault that they just stood there like lemons and watched him die.

OMG how awful! A 25 year old saw the child start choking and did nothing? Heads should be rolling over this. It is unacceptable.

It is OUTRAGEOUS that, in thi day and age, NONE of the cafetera staff knew the Heimlich manuever and, apparently (although not stated) NONE of the teachers appeared to know to maneuver or stepped in to help the boy!!
This is inexcusable!!
Good grief. Are there not still signs up in cafeterias demonstrating the Heimlich Maneuver for them to follow? I think this should be mandatory training for their cafeteria staff.

I clicked on the link... the boy was just beautiful. I just sent emails to my kids principals asking if cafeteria staff are trained in choking emergencies. I had just ASSUMED that with food and children.... duh, choking can happen.
Don’t know about New York, but in neighboring Pennsylvania there is no State requirement that school employees be certified in First Aid/CPR nor any funding for their training.
Now all school meals will be mechanically softened so they can drink them through a straw.
Median IQ of staff at that school was likely high 80s at bestt
