The Republican presidential primary has become a bit feisty, but it will get downright ugly if Ron Paul wins the Iowa caucuses.
The principled, antiwar, Constitution-obeying, Fed-hating, libertarian Republican congressman from Texas stands firmly outside the bounds of permissible dissent as drawn by either the Republican establishment or the mainstream media. (Disclosure: Paul wrote the foreword to my 2009 book.)
But in a crowded GOP field currently led by a collapsing Newt Gingrich and an uninspiring Mitt Romney, Paul could carry the Iowa caucuses, where supporter enthusiasm has so much value.
If Paul wins, how will the media and the GOP react? Much of the media will ignore him (expect headlines like "Romney Beats out Gingrich for Second Place in Iowa"). Some in the Republican establishment and the conservative media will panic. Others will calmly move to crush him, with the full cooperation of the liberal mainstream media.
For a historical analogy, study the aftermath of Pat Buchanan's 1996

We don’t need to worry about that. He gets his greatest strength from 3 camps. Young voters (who don’t show up reliably), disaffected Democrats who feel betrayed, and hard line libertarians/conservatives who like his limited government approach and don’t see that anywhere else. None of those voters are headed back to Obama. I’d be 100% behind Paul if he wasn’t caught up in the moral equivalence crap defending Iran, etc.
I’m hoping Bachmann or Perry come back but we are headed toward an even messier primary season. I’m betting a lot of people are wishing Palin had ran after all. I can’t get a good feel at all which one of these people will win the nomination. This is most certainly a different kind of election.
“Iowa has a pretty crappy track record of predicting nominees. A Paul win ther wont mean much.”
Paul would be a better choice than Mittens. Even though Paul’s crazy, I at least agree with him on some things...
Newt is who we need though.
I remember well how the smear machine kicked in after Buchanan won the 1996 New Hampshire primary. I was reminded of it often when Sarah Palin was being savaged in 2008.
If Newt continues to fall in the polls and looks like he’s “going south”, I’m gonna start rooting for Rick Santorum.
Ron Paul is a republican.
Wait! So is Tom McClintock.
McClintock was thrown away so the GOP, globalist occupied party, could run a globalist, Schwarzenegger, for California governor.
Will they conduct the same war against the opposition to globalism in this election? You betcha!
“He forgot racist, anti-Semitic, Jew-hating, isolationist and 9-11 Truther.”
Not to mention “Asshole.”
GOP. Globalist Occupied Party.
It seems to me that so far it’s going just the way the RINOs, or should I at this point in history just say the Republican establishment, want it to go, which is to leave Romney standing when the smoke clears, just as they did with McCain. If they manage this result, they’re going to get the same result in the general election tht they got with McCain, only worse. They must know this, as another poster said, I’m starting to wonder if they care, what in the world is going on.
Meh, even if he wins Iowa he’s going nowhere so I doubt they’ll get in too much of a twist.
Well said. Globalist, statist, big government. We have two different flavors of the same thing.
Well...that's pretty much all we need as far as gauging the credibility of this article.
Do you think Schwarzenegger was really a republican?
I just wish the GOP would take the gloves off with obama.
Bingo!
And what the hell is so "conservative" about that?
Then you probably wouldn't like his book much, either.
I've talked with over a dozen Ron Paul supporters since 2007 and I have yet to meet one who WON'T sit out the election if Ron Paul isn't the nominee. The cult of "Dr. Paul" is nuttier than he is.
I’m still quite pissed by that to this day. Pissed me off to no end what they did to McClintock.
=8-(
There was GOP candidate in 2008?
