I favor just letting things play out. A vote has yet to be cast. The candidates will have their mettle tested including their organizational and fund raising skills. Hopefully, we will have a primary like the Dems had last time in 2008 between Hillary and Obama. It kept the candidates in the public eye including their attacks on Bush well into the Summer and it forced both camps to run in every state including setting up their organizations, which were used during the general election.

One thing I won't do is to accept the proposition that there are only two choices--Romney or Gingrich. Maybe we can get lucky and have a brokered convention.

What I remember is that Jimmy Carter REFUSED to debate until the very last minute. He thought he shouldn’t have to as the incumbent, and no one could make him.

He only agreed to one dabate, in October, fairly late, because his internal polls showed he was sinking and he was desperate. If he had had a comfortable lead on Reagan, he wouldn’t have done it.

And while I agree that the MSM will run the debates, no one can make Obama likable, and he is very bad at impromptu speaking. I don’t think he will take the risk unless he is desperate.

If this were 6 months ago I might agree with you but at this late date.... seems highly unlikely to me. Perry has some staying power only because he has bucks. But, I don’t give him much of a chance.Just a gut feeling.

People act like this is written in law; it is not. It has only been a tradition since 1980.

1960 versus 1980.

You’re right. Little love for Romney based on his past and perceived present.

I won’t support Romney in the primary but I’ll happily vote for him if he wins the nomination.

I don’t need to list Romney’s downside. His up-side is he’s a proven businessman. He understands the economy, how business works, what creates or destroys jobs, the financial markets, foreign trade and monetary policy. This does not mean he is a conservative but it does mean he will listen to our side, for one, and he will make better decisions compared to 0zero, for another.

With any luck at all he will be gone in 2014.

I don't doubt he might be challenged and defeated for the Senate seat in 2014 - much will depend on how things go in 2012. Graham will go with the winners. If the left triumphs he'll pucker up for them quicker than a jack rabbit. he will serve any master as long as he can be a "player".

However, my point that I didn't make clear, is that Graham, if the wind goes against him in SC, is probably planning to move on to something like a Cabinet position (or one of our new, unconstitutional "czar" positions, under whoever's in charge), no matter who he has to throw under the bus to get it.

Even written law doesn't mean anything to the establishment anymore except when it can be used to their advantage.

That whole thing was nought but a hyped up nothing burger brought by the Clintons, who despisded Newt Gingrich.

The ethical thing, and that joke about Air Force One, and please let us not forget how the Democrats illegally taped Newt during a personal phone call....was all part of a Hillary Clinton orchestration to demonize Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich was the personification of a Clinton nemesis.

It worked. With the help of the media, the great help of the media, they did manage to vilify Gingrich for stuff the Clintons did in spades, not to mention the rest of them.

The Repubs, in typical Repub fashion, went along because they were overwhelmed at the mighty power of the Dems and Lamestream media onslought.

Let’s not do it all again.

Newt isn’t an angel and I’m not going to be his constant defender, but so much that happened back then, an era when I WAS PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION for the first time in my life, was so much nonsense, trumped up claptrap.

I remember it well.

Newt Gingrich ushered in the first Republican takeover of America’s House, he formulated the contract with America, he brought Clinton to his knees with welfare reform and kept Clinton from becoming the Obama he wanted to be, complete with socialized health care reform.

Newt’s at least got a history of going strongly conservative, he did, yes he did. Tell me when Romney’s ever done such a thing.

I believe Newt can do it again. We just got to slap him around a little bit, keep his head on straight.

And there is no better master than the language than Newt and imagine that, a Republican without a mouth full of marbles. The mind gasps with the wonder of it.

I agree about Perry, if he could ever just make it to the campaign trail. He has the same crowd charisma as George Bush, but also like Bush, staged network media appearances are his nemesis. I don’t think Santorum can project the necessary presence, however.

Miss Marple, I too miss Common Tator. His wisdom and experience is sorely needed. I got to know Ray a bit in private exchanges and it turned out I’d met him several times professionally. Like rodguy911 and me, he was an old-line broadcaster and station owner, and I’d met him at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) conventions!

Another old FRiend I really miss is Congressman BillyBob (John Armor). In these troubled times we’d all benefit from the wisdom and insight of these departed FRiends!

Yes, 1960. Brain short circuit.

However, don’t think Nixon debated, did he? (In the presidency, not when he ran against JFK).

So true.

I learned so much from both of those men.

I might go see if I can find some old posts later this week.

Heading off to a late mass. BBL.

Oh, that brings back memories. Everywhere one went people were looking at their TV’s watching those impeachment hearings. In stores, libraries, etc.

I still remember Henry Hyde’s stirring Band of Brothers speech.

Lindsey wasn’t bad in his role. We didn’t know at the time that he was a member of the Band of Bothers.

The Repubs, in typical Repub fashion, went along because they were overwhelmed at the mighty power of the Dems and Lamestream media onslought.

You are entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts. Newt was found guilty by a Republican headed ethics committee that was overwhelmingly supported by the House. Gingrich admitted his guilt and paid a $300,000 fine. The Dems say the same thing about Clinton's impeachment, i.e., it was political. At least the vast majority of Dems voted in support of Clinton. The fact that the Reps did not support their Speaker should tell you something about the charges and about their loyalty and respect for Gingrich.

Supporting someone who is flawed just because he is articulate is not the way to select a candidate. And Gingrich is no conservative. He is a Big Government Rep just like Romney. How do I know that? Because Gingrich has a voting record. He supported the Prescription Drug programs under Medicare (a $7.2 trillion unfunded liability) and rationalized it as actually saving money. He supports amnesty. He believes government has a role in countering global warming. I could go on and on.

Nixon and Kennedy did debate in 1960. It was the famed debate that those who listened to it on radio thought Nixon won and those who saw it on TV thought Kennedy won because of Nixon’s 5 o’clock shadow and sweating profusely. I was 17 at the time and watched it on TV.

The ethics charges against Newt were a witch hunt. Newt was found not guilty on 75 ethics charges.

Newt was found "guilty" and he admitted guilt on one charge. It was the charge of giving false information to Congress about his course donners. The false information was given on one of his paper filings to Congress. Yet Newt gave the correct information about his course donners numerous times to Congress, both on other paper filings, and during oral testimony.

Congress and you are entitled to your own opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts.

The facts show that the ethics charges were a witch hunt.

Yes, I know they debated. I was thinking of Nixon’s subsequent successful runs. I do not remember Nixon debating either Humphrey or McGovern.

I was living in West Berlin when Nixon ran against Humphrey, so perhaps I didn’t see it. I am pretty sure he didn’t debate McGovern.

Kabar...sometimes he gets on his own boat chartered to who knows where.

Newt was villified and demonized in his day. Like I say, he’s no angel...and I, not that Kabar can read or anything, didn’t use his great articulation ability to espouse him, I specifically said that Newt once turned the tide of this country to the right and he did it mightily. THAT’s my main reason for supporting him.

I really hate it when a Freeper helps the Democrats and the Lamestream media cast lies about a Republican.

Thank you for your help in clarifying for Kabar. But he’ll never give up.
