Congressional negotiators struck a deal Thursday that overturns the new rules that were to have banned sales of traditional incandescent light bulbs beginning next year.
That agreement is tucked inside the massive 1,200-page spending bill that funds the government through the rest of this fiscal year, and which both houses of Congress will vote on Friday. Mr. Obama is expected to sign the bill, which heads off a looming government shutdown.
Congressional Republicans dropped almost all of the policy restrictions they tried to attach to the bill, but won inclusion of the light bulb provision, which prevents the Obama administration from carrying through a 2007 law that would have set energy efficiency standards that effectively made the traditional light bulb obsolete.
The bill doesn’t actually amend the 2007 law, but does prohibit the administration from spending any money to carry out the light bulb standards — which amounts to at least a temporary reprieve.

mrs riverdawg likes the warmth of the under-cabinet LEDs in the kitchen, but we haven't tried one in a lamp yet. For one thing, they are still very expensive. But as production ramps up in the coming years, I expect the price to drop substantially. And I have read about(but have yet not seen) new LEDs that are suitable for reading lamps.

We both know how people dispose of them. But don’t tell the EPA.
LOL! So do I, but I got them every time they were buy one get one free or on sale for a really good price. I will never need to buy another light bulb and will be able to hand down a lifetime’s worth of 100 watt bulbs to my children, their children, their children.....
We should make regular Christmas lights, too.
I wanted a set of fancy Christmas lights, that weren’t LED, and couldn’t find them anywhere. I HATE LED lights. They make me feel ill.
Going Green is not the end all be all our children are being taught in school. The end of this Mercury laced light bulb saved little energy and harmed the land, i.e., land fills where tons of the 'pest' now reside. Just the motto..Go Green is toxic. Beware!
Good news; it’s too bad that Congress had to waste time in the first place even passing this unConstitutional ridiculously stupid law.
You are so right. Wait till people discover that the "greenies" pushed through this stupid law that killed American jobs and now we can only use bulbs that have mercury in them and you can not dim your lights anymore. When tenants start complaining that they can't dim their ceiling fan lights anymore I've told my managers to tell them "stop voting for the democrats".

Actually, reports out there suggest that recently manufactured bulbs have very short lives - maybe manufacturers are shipping anything that resembles a lightbulb - quality control be damned ... Have you been happy with recent purchases?
Regardless of what their properties are and whether they are better than incandescent bulbs, the fact is the US government has no business banning them. If the curly bulbs are better the free market will decide, not the government.
I use the curly ones in my bedroom but must use the incandescent bulbs in the bulk of the house because they cause my daughter(who is grown but living here with her two children)gets headaches from them. She is prone to migraines and these things really set her off.
I know several other people who say the same thing about them.
Plus there is the so called mercury factor. However, the free market will take care of it without government interference, something the a**hats in Washington have never learned, nor will they ever until we teach them, but voting all of their sorry a**es out of office, one way or another.
No, the light bulbs stink. Especially the ones on my overhead fan - the smaller ones. Just awful - blow out in two weeks.
Right. It won’t matter if we still have the ‘right’ to purchase the 100 watt bulbs....if they are no longer available TO purchase.
As usual, the Rep Congress has failed us....

They were definitely behind it. I also vaguely remember Jeff Immelt promising that GE would have incandescent bulbs that meet the new efficiency standard by the time the law took effect. I guess he forgot about that part...

More pertinent to the topic though is the super hardball that the mighty GOP is playing. Boy are they tough sons-a-guns. Betcha Obama and Dingy Hairy shake in their boots every day. This light bulb business was by far the most important obstruction they could throw in the path of the libs./s

I was looking at LED Christmas lights today. Seen up close they all had a nauseating flicker.
