Cancer weakened, but did not soften Christopher Hitchens. He did not repent or forgive or ask for pity. As if granted diplomatic immunity, his minds eye looked plainly upon the attack and counterattack of disease and treatments that robbed him of his hair, his stamina, his speaking voice and eventually his life.
I love the imagery of struggle, he wrote about his illness in an August 2010 essay in Vanity Fair. I sometimes wish I were suffering in a good cause, or risking my life for the good of others, instead of just being a gravely endangered patient.
Hitchens, a Washington, D.C.-based author, essayist and polemicist who waged verbal and occasional physical battle on behalf of causes left and right, died Thursday night at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston of pneumonia, a complication of his esophageal cancer, according to a statement from Vanity Fair magazine. He was 62.

Which is why I am do not presume knowledge of who goes where after death. His fate is in the hands of the Almighty, not mere mortals.
May he rest in peace.
..until he had his conversion, he was taunting Christ along with the other thief.
Something happened at the end....he realized Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and acknowledged it.
Teacher bashing?????? I have been here 13 years and I don’t recall any teacher bashing. All manner of religion bashing but “Teach” I think you are a little overly sensitive on the other.
The last second rescues don’t work.
Price of booze should drop, due to reduced demand.
>>So, the Bible is useless, and were set adrift here without instruction, to do whats right in our own eyes, and just hope that God shows mercy on us because we tried hard to be a good person.<<
I never said that.
I said God has infinite mercy. You may not believe that, but I do,
I've known many teachers over the years, and a few of them are actually intelligent.
“some of the comments on here last night just disgusted me
my wife is an atheist...”
There is still time for her to accept Christ. As a late in life convert myself, I know there is hope. If you are a believer, your burden is great.
2 Corinthians 6:14
New King James Version (NKJV)
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
Noob. When you get MY kind of time.... THEN you will MATTER..... ;)
Why? My God is not limited to petty human concerns.
With all due respect, Blaise Pascal worked all that out in the 17th century.
Why don't you stay off these threads? She's got a right to express her opinion like anyone else. Unfortunately many times certain threads take on the air of a revivalist meeting.
yea.. i already know
if she would have been reading the initial thread last night.. that would have confirmed some of her views that i disagree with and try to correct by how i live my life as a christian.
Thank you for saying what many of us also feel.
The fervently religious are often their own worst enemies.
“What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, ‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’ Does the pot exclaim, ‘How clumsy can you be?’”
~Isaiah 45:9
“Now comes the march of those who absolutely cannot stand anyone who cant be bullied into kow-towing to their Imaginary Friend. How dare the man have the dignity to ignore all those threats of Hell the spiritual equivalent of pass on this chain letter or youll have bad luck. But some people just cant be intimidated by the myths of any culture, and it really galls those who are.”
Excellent post. Thank you.
He was a mocker of the Almighty. Poor pitiful thing now.
Yes, that infinite mercy was shown in the sacrifice of His Son on the cross that whosoever believes in Him will have everlasting life.
Hitchens, like all of us was far from perfect!!! But....he was blessed with intelligence, wit and and writing talent. Sometimes I agreed with him, sometimes, I did not!!! But....he was against tryants and “Big Brother” types like POTUS Obama, Castro, Chavez, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Mao, Ortega, etc., and...regardless of his religious beliefs, he was still one of God’s children. On balance, IMHO, I believe our, all merciful, God, Almighty, has taken his wayward son into Heaven, forever more!!! May he rest in peace for eternity!!!
