SHUTDOWN AVERTED: Lawmakers Reach Spending Deal
Business Insider ^ | 12/15/2011 | Zeke Miller

Congressional lawmakers reached an agreement late Thursday to avoid a government shutdown this weekend, Democratic and Republican leaders will push for a final vote on the $1 trillion spending bill on Friday morning — hours before much of the federal government would have been forced to turn out the lights.

The final bill removes several provisions of concern to President Barack Obama — including a measure to reinstate travel restrictions on Cuba, POLITICO reported. It also would ensure the Commodities Futures Trading Commission is fully funded next year.

But Democrats had to drop their opposition to a ban prohibiting the District of Columbia from funding abortions.

The bill does not include an extension of the payroll tax cut or of unemployment insurance benefits — both of which must be dealt with before the end of the year.

You know -- we're going to have to raise the debt ceiling before the next election. Count on it.

And I expect the GOP to handle it badly, and I expect Obama to profit from our mistakes, and he will be re-elected.

It's what the political class wants.

Sounds like Reid caved. He was refusing to bring this up until the payroll tax was resolved.

“The bill does not include an extension of the payroll tax cut or of unemployment insurance benefits — both of which must be dealt with before the end of the year.”

Why?

The federal government is so bankrupt that it must raise taxes dramatically, and this is one easy way to nab dollars from the working poor. The feds also need to cut spending, but the Congress historically hasn’t exhibited much restraint. The key is to raise taxes so rapidly, viciously, and repeatedly that any remaining economic activity cannot move quickly enough to evade taxes. That policy of course will leave America an economic wasteland, but if combined with drastic spending cuts, it could end the crushing federal debt. After repaying the debt, the Congress then could restore economic freedom and lower taxes, provided of course that it also exhibits fiscal restraint almost never characteristic of the Congress.

Are Republicans suppose to be happy and reward the GOP for spending yet another trillion?

I disagree. Unless folks are willing to forgo their SS benefits, they should be paying into the fund.

I am not sure when these tax increases go into effect but my guess is Jan 1st? I pray that the folks who are still working don’t have to come up with additional taxes on April 15th...

“Why?”

Because the GOP hasn’t caved yet on the Keystone pipeline. but not to worry they will.

Why is it these near “shutdowns” never seem to happen when Republicans are in the White House?
