CAFE Spells RIP for Trucks: Ford Ranger the first casualty.
American Spectator ^ | 12.13.11 @ 6:07AM | Eric Peters

The government's pending (2016) 35.5 MPG CAFE fuel economy requirements -- which for the first time apply to trucks as well as passenger cars -- are going to make it very difficult for any automaker to sell trucks in volume in this country.

Ford has just dropped the compact-size Ranger from its U.S. model lineup -- making it the first CAFE casualty -- and I predict that larger trucks are on the endangered species list now, too....

Even a small truck with a four-cylinder engine will have a hard time averaging 35.5 MPG....

You’ve got to be joking.

The ranger is the world’s all time biggest selling vehicle.

Price differential issues are now choking all compact trucks.

CAFE does not generate efficient vehicles; it generates small, inefficient vehicles.

For real efficiency (ton-miles per gallon) a fully loaded F-150/Titan will take the crown.

You can haul a little in a pickup, but you need a truck. At least a 1 1/2 or 2 ton for a couple of cords, but they often overload them with more than that.

Pickups are good for hauling a little gravel, bales of hay, some ranch supplies...the trash.

He doesn’t understand that some people need trucks for their daily lives. In rural areas some have to haul water to their home. You can’t put hay bales in the back of one of those four cylinder jobs. And what about people who just prefer a truck. Talk about being out of touch.

I’ve just decided that the best thing about a big ole pick up is riding it around in the burbs aggravating people who don’t think we need one. LOL!!!!

What’s a burb?

Maine doesn’t have a city. We do, however, have the Skidder Crowd.

Sunday drivers of the future!

How do you start them? Do you have to open the choke and pull the ripcord to the little lawn mower engine? B-P One of those could FIT in the back of a 1972 Ford Ranchero.

Have you checked the Ranger’s sales figures from recent years?

Huge sales figures from five to fifteen years ago mean nothing today.

"I think"? What are ya, some kinda...? They ARE useless

PS. A Jeep is better than a pickup. A van is better than a pickup. A horse is better than a pickup. A hatchback is better than a pickup.

No matter how much you try to dress up such statements as "facts", they are STILL nothing more, or less, than your own opinions.

PS -

The Ford Ranger NOT the world's all time best selling vehicle. The Toyota Corolla is the world's all time best selling vehicle. The Ford ‘F’ series pickup is the #2 all time best selling vehicle in the world. (

The Ford Ranger doesn't even make the top 20 — Ford has sold more Model T's (#7 on all-time sales list) than Ford Rangers.

Yeah, that’s true.

OK, it’s morning and you’re ready to go to work. You go outside and there’s 10 inches of fresh snow on the ground and all your gear is in the back of your pickup...somewhere under the snow.

You get past all that, hop in and get ready to drive to work on the yet un-plowed roads.

So, under these conditions, what would you call your regular basic pickup?

Probably lots of things, but I’d call it STUCK!

And that’s a fact Jack.

(They’re also helpless in 2” of snow)

I’ll take that pass, thanks!
One of my favorite ? memories is being on I-95 in the Wrangler with the top and doors off and coming up alongside a semi taking chickens to the slaughter house. Feathers flying, little feet sticking out and the look of “get me outta here” on their little faces...
Put me off fried chicken for a year...

No. Once again, it is your OPINION; perhaps it is an opinion based on your own personal experience, perhaps not, but it is still just an opinion. The FACT is, many people have no problems driving pickup truck in snow. It takes 18"-20" of snow to interfere with the operation of my pick-up truck.

Maybe if you load it up with cement blocks and put chains on it.

A basic stock pickup truck. Right. Maybe a 4x4. What is it, powder?
