Ugly divide at NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) pits Jaczko vs. fellow commissioners (OMG bad)
Politico ^ | 12-9-2011 | Darren Goode

Posted on 12/09/2011 8:10:53 PM PST by Danae

A war among the five commissioners of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission broke into the open Friday night when Republican Rep. Darrell Issa released a letter in which four of the commissioners said they have “grave concerns” about NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko.

In the letter — which was sent to the White House in October but not made public until Friday night — the four NRC members say Jaczko, a former aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, is a bully who is “causing serious damage” to the commission with “increasingly problematic and erratic" behavior.

The letter from Democratic Commissioners William Magwood and George Apostolakis and Republicans Kristine Svinicki and William Ostendorff says Jaczko "intimidated and bullied" staff, told staff to withhold information and ignored the views of the other members of the five-person commission.

In turn, Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) released a report late Friday — originally set for a rollout Monday — charging that those four commissioners had “conspired to delay and weaken nuclear reactor safety” after Japan's Fukushima disaster in March, including by resisting Jaczko's efforts to implement new safeguards.

“The actions of these four Commissioners since the Fukushima nuclear disaster has caused a regulatory meltdown that has left America’s nuclear fleet and the general public at risk,” Markey said in a statement. “Instead of doing what they have been sworn to do, these four Commissioners have attempted a coup on the Chairman and have abdicated their responsibility to the American public to assure the safety of America’s nuclear industry.”

This is ridiculous.

The “accident” at Fukushima wasn’t an accident: it was an environmental disaster caused by nature. As such there wasn’t anything humanly possible to prevent it. Of course, in Sen.Markey’s opinion, the solution is no nuclear plants or subs at all.

I haven’t heard any new information on how high that tsunami, which swept over the facility, acutally was determined to be. Last I read it was 48 feet in height. If it was higher I would definitely like to be corrected.

Senator Markey is using that tragedy as an opportunity to screw over the nuclear industry in this country. He has already done a massive disservice to the nation by participating in the coming shutdown of coal burning power plants which supply 60% of all electrical energy in the nation.

Actually, you could say that this is good news. As usual, Obama appointed a leftist nutball to run the NRC, in hopes of shutting the nuclear industry down. But even his own two other Democrat appointees are resisting.

That’s better than what is happening at the EPA, the Department of Energy, and elsewhere.

I had expected that Obama and the left would use Fukushima as a reason to shut down the entire industry, and was wondering what was taking them so long.

Not that this isn’t pretty bad—another key agency run by an Obamanoid nutball extremist. But evidently he isn’t entirely getting his way.

There is Evil, Then there is Stupid. Then there is deliberate Stupidity to the point of being evil.

All of it is INCOMPETENT.

That damn freak in the White House should be REMOVED forthwith. He is a clear and Present Danger to this Nation.

Not that it lessens the significance of you post and associated concerns, but the NRC is responsible for Civilian use of nuclear materials. All military use for propulsion on ships is monitored through DOD, via the Naval Reactors group. Not sure where the nuclear weapons fall, as far as jurisdiction, but do not believe it to be the NRC, either.

Again, neither of those facts lessens the dog and pony show unfolding as cited in your post.

It doesn’t affect just the Power Generation side of things. The NRC governs all our Nuke weapons as well.

Incompetence of this scale should be punished by jail time. It isn’t just us at risk here, it’s a global risk. That Jackhat chairman should be the first in line to get 25 to life followed closely by his boss OholyO.

About NRC
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
is responsible for regulating domestic activities
related to radiation protection and nuclear safety
for nuclear facilities and for promoting the common
defense and security related to uses of radioactive
materials. The NRC also licenses the import and
export of radioactive materials, participates in
international nuclear activities, including multilateral
and bilateral safety and security activities, and
works closely with its international counterparts to
enhance nuclear safety and security worldwide.

This is a COMPLETE Cluster F*** of the highest Order. The NRC controls EVERY nuclear thing in the US. From our nuclear power plants, to the reactors on Subs and surface ships, to nuclear weapons.

I know what you mean but fortunately this is total BS. The civilian operators and the military control the nuclear power plants and weapons, and they know what they are doing.

The NRC is in charge of oversight, and frankly, I wouldn’t trust a democrat to be anywhere near the truth, and especially someone having worked closely with Harry Reid, that’s right guilty by association.

Ed Markey doesn’t inspire any confidence either injecting political crap into the issues. I’m betting Jaczko wanted to “REACT” to the Japanese disaster by government overreach. Sort of on the order of the German Chancellor shutting down all nuclear generating plants.

but the NRC is responsible for Civilian use of nuclear materials

Actually... that's partially true. It is responsible for ALL nuclear material in the US (and abroad, if we have a hand in it). That was a big issue with President Truman. DOD gets bombs from NRC.

That is not correct. The NRC can and does have a direct effect on our military. See this PDF of a recent (March 2011) vote of the commission.

www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc.../commission/cvr/.../2011-0023vtr.pdf

The NRC has a big impact on the Military.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has no authority over naval reactors.
