Part-time Legislature? Why not?
Oarnge County Register ^ | 12/9/11 | Mark Landsbaum

It’s always good to end a week on a high note. Here’s a high note, to be sure:

A constitutional amendment to switch California’s Legislature to a part-time body meeting about three months a year is proposed. ...

You can pretty much trace the state’s problems to the four-decade history of its full-time Legislature. Coincidence? I think not.

Meet for 3 months a year, or every other year.....

Jan- Budget

June- Consider new laws (that were introduced at the end of Jan.... committee work done in May online)

Nov- Consider repeal of laws (committee work done in October online)

.................

I think that should be the rule.

If you can get the state’s business done in three months, then yeah, go for it. This will also take away the career politican, forcing them into a part-time roll right off the bat.

And no paid staffers. Just interns under 24, who work for minimum wage. That’d kill off the lobbyists right there.

There is an age limit on congressional pages, right?

If you can amend the state constitution to do this you can amend it to ban funding of NGOs or giving subsidies (or advantage) to corporations.

That would pretty much kill off lobbying.

Yes, and it it TIME to DownSize DC!

Close entire Departments

example: U.S. Department of Education including their SWAT Teams.

Return the functions worth keeping to the States.

Kalipornia is Hollyweird, the interns must be under 18 and open to anything.

:\

Unfortunately, a part time legislature won’t work any better than a full time legislature for one reason: they are professional thieves and they will steal just as much or more part time as they would full time. Best bet would be to bring back tar and feathers.

The unions and special interests will be there but politicians can’t do as much damage if they are home most of the year.

California has far too many laws and too little freedom.

With the exception of 2 years in the Assembly, ONE PARTY has controlled the legislature for all four of those decades.

Coincidence? I think not.
