Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday overruled federal drug regulators to block wider access to the controversial contraceptive known as Plan B.
In a decision critics said could only be explained by politics, Sebelius ruled that women younger than 17 will need a prescription to get Plan B, which is sometimes called the morning-after pill.
Scientists at the Food and Drug Administration determined that Plan B should be made available without a prescription to women of all ages, according to a statement from FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. And Hamburg agreed with their decision. But Sebelius intervened to block over-the-counter access to minors.

Because it works by blocking implantation and if implanted it forces the woman with a huge dose of hormones to shed the lining of the uterus thus ending the pregnancy.
Bingo. If we are so unlucky as to get stuck with ZerO for another 4 years, this decision will be changed the day after the election.
No, I’m perfectly happy that girls <17 still can’t.
The other battle was lost 5 years ago. Today this one is a temporary win.
It won’t stay that way unless we unseat Obama and his death obsessed cohorts.
But for now, just for today, can I please be happy with just this little tiny victory? Please!
“It wont stay that way unless we unseat Obama and his death obsessed cohorts...”
Are you serious? It was a Republican president who gave approve for the Plan B Home Abortion Kit to be sold over the counter at drugstores.
And I have not heard one current GOP candidate say that they would withdraw FDA approval of the Plan B Home Abortion Kit.
I was speaking specifically about the little victory of keeping it prescription only for the <17 crowd.
Why do you keep extrapolating my very specific comments to the general and then hitting me over the head with them?
It is a very stupid thing to do, attacking those in the trenches with you by deliberately misunderstanding or twisting their words.
I don’t want to associate with people like you, even if you are pro-life. You do more harm than good with your knee jerk animosity toward anyone you perceive as not toeing your line.
Get over yourself.
Sorry, but if we are going to be Pro Life, we need to protect all human life, and that includes those babies who were conceived last night by a mom who is older than 17.
And as it stands now, any 13-16 year old girl can have a 17 year old friend go to the local Walmart and buy the Plan B Home Abortion Kit.
That was the best summary I have heard!
That is still one more step than being able to buy it herself, its still one more person in on the “secret” and one more person who might disclose the truth to authorities or parents. One is still more than zero, I’ll take it.
The real problem is that they allow it to be sold to men, who will simply be coercing their underage victims to take it.
“The real problem is that they allow it to be sold to men, who will simply be coercing their underage victims to take it.”
No, the real problem is that your government allows the Plan B Home Abortion Kit to be sold.
And every victim of the Plan B Home Abortion Kit is underage!
True dat.
