OK...I’ve rethought...I’m not getting one. I have in the past until last year. I didn’t like the way it was rushed on the public, practically without testing.

Sorry but I really don’t see the point in remembering something that happened almost a century ago.

It is quite difficult to comprehend your reasoning when you start your posts with sentences like this.

Under your reasoning, I guess we should get rid of Memorial Day (the anniversary of the victory parade of the Grand Armies of the Republic through Washington City to celebrate the end of the Civil War) and Veterans Day (the day the First World War ended).

How about the National and State Battlefields from the Revolution, War of 1812, and Civil War? Since everyone who fought in those conflicts are long gone (and as your said, most youngsters don't care too much about history) we should put this land to better use and throw up a couple of Wal-Marts and condo complexes.

Don’t do it, Ma.
I was fine until they gave me that shot.
As you said, it hasn’t been tested enough.
I’m off to bed!

A young man I work with asked us elderly (ha!) guys yesterday what Pearl Harbor Day was... I almost cried.

What an confoundedly interesting subject war is, responses to attacks, commitments to allies, protection of investments. assets and commerce and just short sighted political blundering which ignores the previous three at the whim of the controlling power. We're at stage four now.
Of course we could adopt isolationist policies and recycle the lot.

Deja vu, la guerre!

Thanks, Stonewall, for the list of damaged ships.

After a systematic search for survivors, formal salvage operations began. Captain Homer N. Wallin, Material Officer for Commander, Battle Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, was immediately ordered to lead salvage operations. ‘Within a short time I was relieved of all other duties and ordered to full time work as Fleet Salvage Officer.

Around Pearl Harbor, divers from the Navy (shore and tenders), the Naval Shipyard, and civilian contractors (Pacific Bridge and others) began work on the ships that could be refloated. They patched holes, cleared debris, and pumped water out of ships. Navy divers worked inside the damaged ships. Within six months, five battleships and two cruisers were patched or refloated so they could be sent to shipyards in Pearl and on the mainland for extensive repair.

Intensive salvage operations continued for another year, a total of some 20,000 man-hours under water. Oklahoma, while successfully raised, was never repaired, and capsized while under tow to the mainland in 1947. Arizona and the target ship Utah were too heavily damaged for salvage, though much of their armament and equipment was removed and put to use aboard other vessels. Today, the two hulks remain where they were sunk,[90] with Arizona becoming a war memorial.

Info from here.

Welcome to the Canteen, metesky. So sad what is NOT taught in school. History is sadly neglected.

Did you “elderly” guys enlighten him?

Evenin' Kathy! *hugs*

No, it must not be forgotten. But, if the younger generations are not being taught, it sure doesn't say much for the history teachers drawing a paycheck! Shameful!

Interesting thread, tho! :)

“Interesting” it is....*HUGS*....and it doesn’t say much for the school districts that set the curriculum to conveniently leave out big “events” in the history of the United States

After being in the 30s and 40s, now it is 18 and virtually no snow.

Hope you are having nice weather that doesn’t aggravate your allergies.

Weather is chilly with sunshine but it isn't keeping those things at bay. Doc can't figure it out. So, life just goes on.

Are you supposed to get snow?

So sorry about those things.

Snow? Maybe on Thursday...a day I took off for the dentist and me stuff. If it does snow, it will be like the first snow all over again with upwards of a 100 fender benders.

I think I finished my Dad’s shopping list, and now I have to start on my Mom’s. Thankfully my Dad is choosing not to drive at all lately.

In Remembrance.

Thanks for the thread.

(Meanwhile, Obama’s kids are eating Japanese food at Sidwell school in remembrance of Pearl Harbor. I kid you not. There is a thread somewhere in FR on the subject.)

Welcome to the Canteen, samtheman. Thanks for helping remember.

"...Obama’s kids are eating Japanese food at Sidwell school in remembrance of Pearl Harbor...".

Can't say I am surprised at all. *sigh*
