Some Democratic strategists worry about Gingrich’s potential appeal

Democratic strategist Jim Jordan says he and others in the party “passionately” want to face Gingrich. And from the right, conservative pundit Ann Coulter is warning that the former House speaker’s past extramarital affairs and other baggage make him a far less formidable nominee than Romney.

But even as Gingrich’s sudden rise has filled many Obama supporters with cheer and some Republicans with dread, some Democratic strategists worry that the combative Gingrich presents some challenges for the Obama campaign that would not exist if Romney were the GOP candidate....

Gingrich could pursue a strategy that combines energizing the conservative base and chipping away Democratic support among Hispanics — an electoral formula that helped George Bush win in 2004.

Some Democrats believe that Gingrich ... would excite the party base more than a former liberal-state governor with a history of centrist views. And voters yearning for authenticity may be more open to the voluble and rumpled former House speaker, who frequently discusses his past mistakes and his recent conversion to Catholicism, than to a former equity-fund executive with perfect hair.

“He does not carry Wall Street baggage,” said one Democratic strategist working on the Obama reelection effort, speaking on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss his thinking. “He’s really smart. He’s authentic....”

Gingrich has an extensive Hispanic outreach organization, which he has been building for years. Unlike anything in the Romney playbook, that network could give Gingrich a head start slicing into Obama’s base in key states in the Mountain West, where Hispanics are a fast-growing swing voting bloc. Polls show Hispanic voters ... still favor the president — but GOP strategists believe that winning 40 percent of that vote could disrupt Obama’s electoral college strategy by putting Colorado, Arizona and Nevada in the Republican column.

In quite a few of the recent polls, Newt has been doing very well among independents, better than Romney. Also he consistently is getting a lot of the latino vote as well. There is definitely a great case to be made that he is a greater threat to Obama than Mittens.

So all this talk of “we are dreaming for a Newt candidacy” from the Democrats is just BS intended to throw off the process?

Romney’s campaign will be less exciting, and less combative, than watching paint dry.

Yes. The Dems fear Newt MUCH more than Romney. Romney won’t attack. Newt will.

And Newt is more than likely willing to go out and grab Herman Cain or Allen West as his VP. That also keeps Dems up at night. Romney will more than likely pick Huntsman as his VP.

The simple fact is that Romney’s national support has a floor of 25% and doesn’t drop below that level . . . and a ceiling of 26% and doesn’t rise above that level. Those who haven’t settled for Romney because he’s inevitable or because it’s his turn are not even willing to consider that big government liberal. Newt, as terrible as he is in many ways is at least not Romney. He may even be the best not-Romney candidate left standing. That’s sad, but it’s the reality we’re stuck with.

It’s just “smack talk”, and they say it about EVERY (R) candidate.

“Delusional” is a synonym for Democrat.

oh no please not Huntsman as VP. I know people don't usually vote for the President based on his selection of VP but Rubio as VP choice much better. Huntsman could put an insomniac to sleep.

"Some Democratic strategists worry about Gingrich’s potential appeal"

That would also include members of the other 1/2 of the "ruling class"; RINO strategists.

I am very leery of the people we have running now. I just wish someone else would come in. Newt has just to much baggage. Romney never could gain traction this time or last. With this crew it should be Obamas to lose. Then again with his popularity rating the same should be about him. I think it may not be tolate for someone else to get in. It may be to late to sign up for the first primariies. But, then again Newt could win them all and implode. God help us and send some one else. Maybe Thune, Portman, Jindol Huckabee, Mcdonnell. We have jsut to many good people not to be able to put up someone good, not t omention this year is just to important.

"He does not carry Wall Street baggage,” said one Democratic strategist working on the Obama reelection effort,..."

There you have it! The admission as to why the corrupt MSM has been pushing so hard for Mitt. Once Mitt got nominated they would work feverishly with their Democrat brethren to push Mitt as the quintessential dirty, corrupt Wall Street insider. Wall Street versus Main Street. You can see how they were building all their strategy around a Mitt nomination, from OWS to Obama's ongoing inflammatory class warfare schtick.

Not necessarily a big Newt fan, but you can see they were NOT prepared for Newt and certainly have concerns about him. If he gets the nomination watch for the corrupt MSM to attack him without mercy.

Romney will more than likely pick Huntsman as his VP.

Seriously? If (God forbid!) Romney gets the not and picks Huntsman as his running mate, do you think they'll campaign door-to-door on bikes?

For one thing, the country wouldn't ever again fall for the old "some Democratic strategists" gag in the scribbling of partisan media shills.

Gingrich will say something near a live mic by mid-October that will essentially end the race. Pelosi is desperately hoping Gingrich could win it, so she will control the White House.
