RALEIGH, N.C. Environmental groups are fighting a planned wind farm near a wildlife refuge in northeastern North Carolina over fears the giant blades will kill migrating swans, geese and other fowl.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Saturday that construction on the 11,000-acre Pantego Wind Energy Facility was planned for next year (http://bit.ly/vYTxg3). Plans for what could be North Carolina's first commercial wind farm call for 49 turbines rising 492 feet, to the blade tip.
The 80-megawatt project is planned several miles from the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, created in 1963 to attract migrating snowbirds. Several years ago, the U.S. Navy had to abandon its plans to build an airfield nearby over similar concerns about bird kills.
Many of the same environmental groups who fought the Navy, and have long advocated for wind energy, are lining up against the wind farm in Beaufort County. They worry about more than 100,000 birds whose migrations in North Carolina typically begin this month.
The North Carolina Utilities Commission has scheduled hearings Tuesday in Raleigh. Opponents want the commission to put the proposal on hold until the potential threat to birds can be determined. They include the Southern Environmental Law Center, Sierra Club and Friends of Pocosin Lakes Wildlife Refuge.
Environmental groups are "bashing" wind projects in every state. The greens are the first ones to talk about global warming but if you put a wind project near their personal camp ground, they go ballistic. This is a case of arrogant nimbyism. The truth is that greens really don't want solutions - they want control and the cost of fossil fuel to rise to inhibit its use. They are so willing to diminish our lives for the sake of their green religion, yet, never ask them to suffer the slight indignity of seeing a wind farm. If every square foot of outdoors is equivalent to the Grand Canyon, then renewable energy will never happen - and they are okay with that as well. So they claim Climate Change is killing habitat and species but don't show them wind projects, they don't want to see them, or hear them.
Guess we need some kind of “Environmental Solutions Agency” to deal with this. LOL
That's fine with me. Its like Trotzky vs. Stalin. Maybe they will both lose.
If at any time someone appears to have contradictory views, it’s because you’re incorrectly taking their reasoning at face value.
Gang Green doesn’t want “clean energy”, they want NO energy, for the masses, at least.
They should embrace this, think of it as accelerated natural selection - only the best of the best survive the gauntlet - and those guys love Darwin!
Please, no more calls ladies and gentlemen we have a winner!!!
Perhaps they're starting to realize that the more money wasted on "green energy" subsidies will mean less cash when they go on food stamps and other government subsistence programs in the not too distant future!
Just returned from a air trip over W. Va, SW Penn.
Saw two wind farms ranging across ridges.
At distance they looked like a fences. Closer, I saw what they were. No blades turning. Three days later on the return flight, still not turning.
Just sitting there being an eyesore.
Given the ground in the eastern part of the county, I don't know how they are going to anchor these things to keep them from falling over. They will need truly massive concrete pads.

Industry should take these suits to judges in other places to show the hipocrisy...Judge they sue for the sake of stopping progress not for the face value. Spotted Owls die from eagles not logging...etc. etc.
Just a few years back - we heard cries of "natural gas" as a substitute for other more "CO2 costly" fuels. Then, as the natural gas industry expanded to bring that to market - they now are filing lawsuits to shut down the drilling and utilization of natural gas.
Electric vehicles - that we now see (reflected in the Government Motors Volt) that are more costly to the environment to manufacture, dispose of the expended battery components, and is likely to burn or blow up if you have a wreck and get hit in the side...
A couple of decades back, the same enviro-nuts began fighting hydroelectric plants... after pushing FOR them years before to get away from fossil fuels.
They won't have anything to do with Nuke power
Now they are against wind power...
So what's left? Hamsters in a cage running tiny generators? Oh - wait, can't do that because it is inhumane exploitation of the poor animals...
