I betcha that if the parent went down to the school and started beating some teachers &$$ there would be charges brought on the parent.
Having taught a number of English classes for kids, I can somehow sympathize...
If I had my way, classes for kids between the ages of 5 to 12 would have cells in the back.
Just THINKING about some of the antics I’ve seen makes my bones age.
I’d bet even money that the student in question - cough feral animal cough - is being “mainstreamed” against the wishes of anyone with a lick of sense.
When I was in kindergarten, my teacher did the same thing to one of the kids in class.
She told him every time he talked, she’d put on another piece of tape. By the end of the activity, he looked like a mummy. He’d force air under the tape and “pop” it loose, then talk through his masking tape beard.
Of course, that was almost 40 years ago. Nothing was thought of it then.
Years later, after I became a teacher, I had that student’s son in class. Sure enough, the kid couldn’t stop talking...

The teacher and the kid have their roles reversed. The government schools would likely perform better if the kids tied the teachers into their chairs and taped their mouths shut and then read their assignments.
If a parent did this, they'd be prosecuted. This teacher is lucky they only lost their job.
I can not think of a situation where this could possibly be appropriate. No matter how disruptive the student was to the class, it would be even more disruptive to tie that student to a chair, and then tape the child’s mouth closed. That it was a music class is even more questionable.
On the positive side, the taxpayers only had to pay for an extra week of salary (though much more likely an extra month, knowing how districts sweeten resignation deals), and likely paid some sum to the parents of the child who was restrained as a settlement (which of course we’ll be never permitted to hear about, lest it break some silly confidentiality agreement...)
In the end, this is yet another encouragement to parents to look away from the public school system and choose a more appropriate learning environment.
Oh, and as for ‘no crime being committed’, try doing this to a child of a district attorney, and find out just how many charges you rack up. You can start with battery upon a child under the color of authority and go from there.
"The prosecutor and Sheriff Vic Davis say the child's family asked that no charges be filed."
Also sounds like the parents knew what the teacher was up against with that kid.
The kid sounds like he needs to go straight to jail...do not pass go.
Turn about is fair play. Usually it’s the kids that tie the teacher to the chair.
“”music teacher Lindsey Cope broke no laws””
But the kid who said his teacher was cute got in trouble this week and another kid got in trouble (sexual harassment) for touching another kid????
I don’t remember any kid being tied to a chair 70 years ago but I remember myself and others having tape applied to our mouths for talking in first or second grade.
