Early results from Egypt's first post-revolution election showed Islamist parties sweeping to victory, including hardline Salafists, with secular parties trounced in many areas. Partial figures trickled in for the areas of the country that voted in record numbers on Monday and Tuesday, confirming earlier predictions that Islamist parties would win at least two thirds of the ballots cast.

In Port Said, the moderate Islamist alliance led by the previously banned Muslim Brotherhood triumphed with 32.5% of votes for parties, while the hardline Al-Nur party gained 20.7%, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily said.

The liberal Wafd party won 14%, while another Islamist party Al-Wassat, which advocates a strict interpretation of Islamic law, recorded 12.9%, according to Al-Ahram.

Probably most of the protestors were Liberals. I remember the one guy who worked for Google got a lot of press. Now it turns out the Islamists are the big winners. Can you say Islamic state? I knew you could.

Obama reminds me more of Carter every day.

No surprise. In any "revolution" the useful idiots get cast aside by the extremists when they consolidate power.

The comparison is right on. Carter wanted the Shaw gone and look what we got. Obama wanted Mubarak gone and look what we are about to get. Egypt may well elect to cozy up to Iran to the huge disadvantage of Israel and our national security interest as well. Can Libya be far behind?

Thanks to all the weak, effete, Republican elite who supported this and also the takeover of Libya by Al Quida in coalition with the American Military.

One difference may be that Obama appears to specifically want muslim-brotherhood-oriented governments to replace those he topples. The former egyptian foreign minister apparently said in a tv interview that obama told him , among other things, that he supports the ‘muslim agenda.’ The only way you get a muslim agenda between all the muslim countries is by embracing that type of political party.

Good way to kill off what’s left of the tourist industry.

Arab spring makes strange bedfellows and shows how dumb liberals are, to be supporting islamist theocrats who would outlaw everything they hold dear.

You are right about Obama but I'm not so sure that Carter didn't want a muslim government in Iran. I think he did but don't hold me to it.

It is increasingly clear that the only thing that “liberals” hold dear is the increase in state power, and the only thing they actually are opposed to is the Gospel. Sharia is thus very appealing to “liberals”.

I actually want that word — “liberal” — back. We, American conservatives (and Burkean conservatives on the other side of the pond), are the ones defending liberty and free markets (which is what “liberalism” originally meant). The statists who stole the word can use another, “progressive” or if they really want to be honest “statist”, “dirigiste” or “fascist”.

New rules for Egyptian tourists.

1. Do not take a Bible with you.
2. Women must wear Burka’s or veils.
3. Jewish? Don’t even think about it.
4. I hope you like Halal meals.
5. Get your will up to date before your visit.
6. Remember to face Mecca when you see everyone’s butt go in the air during prayer time.

if you can't remember which direction not to piss or spit in (or if you really decide you DO want to know) there is an app for that!

The thought of ever visiting Egypt disappeared for me a long time ago. The news reports of western tourist groups being gunned down by islamic militants pretty much ended that idea. This news just reinforces my thoughts on that.

Yep. There are a lot of countries that fall into that category. I hear that if you go to Paris and end up in the wrong part of town, it could be very bad for you.

Sounds like Washington DC...
