Over the last couple of days, several well-regarded Republican pundits have taken it upon themselves to educate Republican primary voters about the many shortcomings of Newt Gingrich. As I read them, I was reminded of Abraham Lincoln's reaction to the series of military and political experts who warned him that Ulysses S. Grant was an overly ambitious, incompetent drunk. When these experts demanded Grant's removal after the then-unprecedented casualties at Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, Lincoln acknowledge Grant's shortcomings but responded, "I can't spare this man; he fights." Many of Grant's critics were enamored of George B. McClellan, a parade ground general who consistently overstated the strength of his Confederate opposition and who had long fancied himself the presidential frontrunner for 1864. The bottom line was that while McClellan considered himself the next Napoleon, it was apparent to Lincoln that it was Grant who actually had the rare 2 o'clock in the morning courage Napoleon himself so highly valued. In 1863, during Grant's siege of Vicksburg and amid his own growing unhappiness with the series of generals rotated through the leadership of the Army of the Potomac following McClellan's dismissal, Lincoln's reply to the incessant complaints of Grant's critics was even more pointed.

The FReepers comparing Newt to Winston Churchill (!!!) this past week sent me to Costco for bulk size barf bags. Are you guys f-ing serious?
We need to back whomever is running against Obama. when the primary is over we MUST unite or fall. Every vote counts!
Gee what a greatway to ensure that every GOP nominee from now on is the establishemnt choice.
One of the two will get 0% against Obama.
Gingrich is NOT an establishment choice. Did all the history of the late 80s and early to mid 90s suddenly disappear? Gingrich was considered a rebel then and he still is. I present to the jury, one George Will. Case closed.
“So Newt is the new Grant? Seriously? He will throw conservatives under the bus at the first opportunity that suits him. That said, so will Romney. At this point we will end up with one of them.”
The hell we will. Third party before EITHER the flip-flopper or the flip-flopping philanderer. I’m the uncommitted independent—and I vote.
I’ve ceased to care about the Presidential race. Here are the outcomes —
- Obummer wins, he keeps proposing America-destroying laws, but the GOP stay strong in opposing him.
- Newt or Mittens wins. They promote amnesty, expanding Obamneycare, cap and trade, and more liberal crap. But because they have an R after their names, the weak willed establishment Republicans let this sail right through with Dimocrat blessing.
Either way, America goes down the drain, UNLESS we pack Congress with rock ribbed conservatives.
Time to take things to the states. The Presidency is a lost cause.
[He will throw conservatives under the bus at the first opportunity that suits him. That said, so will Romney. At this point we will end up with one of them.]
I think Newt is more conservative than Romney (which isn’t saying much), but Newt’s real saving grace may be that he backtracks when conservatives hold his feet to the fire. Romney gave his Romneycare an ‘A’ even given the chance to back down.
I’m not saying Gingrich is the best for us, just that we might be able to hold a blowtorch to his feet until 2016.
My personal feeling is that Grant was the greatest field commander we ever had. Vicksburg showed that.
Of course, just my opinion.
