With the Republican presidential primary appearing to have narrowed into a two-man contest, Human Events and Red State moved quickly to lock down a date for a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
The two organizations went so far this past Monday as to firm up the Annenberg Theater at the Newseum in Washington as the venue on Dec. 19 after another debate originally scheduled that day was canceled. For its part, the Newseum was excited to host the pre-primary forum.
There was just one problem. While Gingrich was ready to take his place on the stage, the Romney campaign politely declined in a series of mostly e-mail exchanges.
As Joe Guerriero, a Human Events editor, put it to RCP: Newt was all over it, and the Romney camp basically said no. It wasnt a harsh no, but it was a no.

Newt will spin with the best of them. He stated the reason he was porking his mistresses was b/c he loved his country so much. His answers a few months back regarding Paul Ryan were all over the place. He came back full circle this week when he he said he stood by his comments re: Ryan and right wing social engineering. He has discussed how horrible TARP was, yet stated that he would have voted for it.
But this is small stuff compared to the fact that as a grown learned man he was of the opinion that it is constitutional for the federal government to have to power to force me to buy health insurance, Callista's Tiffany & Co. jewelry, or any other service or good.
"Maybe Zer0 could challenge him to a pitching contest to see who throws most like a girl."
Newt’s past transgressions are history. The jewelry he bought Calista was paid for with HIS own money..that is his business. His answer regarding Ryan is very explicit..have you read it or heard it? it is crystal clear.
With respect to President Obamas health insurance mandate, Newt believes it is an unprecedented and unconstitutional expansion of federal power. If the federal government can coerce individualsby threat of finesto buy health insurance, there is no stopping the federal government from forcing Americans to buy any good or service. It is a serious and unconstitutional infringement of individual liberty.
With respect to Governor Romneys mandate, we have observed that it doesnt achieve its goal of providing low cost catastrophic coverage for the uninsured. The intractable problem we have learned from experience with health insurance mandates is this: once you have a mandate, the government has to specify exactly what coverage must be included in insurance for it to qualify. This introduces political considerations into determining these minimum standards, guaranteeing that nothing desired by the special interests will be left out.
In the 1990s, Newt and many other conservatives, such as the Heritage Foundation, proposed a mandate to purchase health insurance as the alternative to Hillarycare. However, the problems outlined above caused Newt to come to the principled conclusion that a mandate to purchase health insurance was unconstitutional, unworkable and counterproductive to lowering the cost of healthcare.
Today, Newt carries the banner in fighting for the repeal of Obamacare and advocates for a patient power replacement that will create a free market framework for healthcare, provide affordable, portable, and reliable healthcare coverage, and establish a healthcare safety net focused on those truly in need. This system moves us towards the goal of healthcare for all with no unconstitutional mandate of any kind.

Mitt needs his questions vetted by a moderator. He is great at talking points, but L-D debates require ongoing discussion. It would require Mitt to get off of his talking points.
Solly me! I didn’t know we were electing a pope. I thought we were electing a president.
I’ll take your word on that, since I have never heard of him.
That means we have no one to vote for. How unfortunate for the Republic.
The debate between the two front runners would have served as an eye opener to voters that are undecided. If Romney wants his views heard and the differences between himself and Newt aired..why not seize the opportunity?
and I agree with you...the gop slate could have been a lot better but I am dealing with the choices we do have and imo...Newt is the man.
Very dissapointed in Romney’s refusal.
No way Sarah takes the second spot two tickets running. The abuse she took last time knocked her out of this race, you think she'll take it again to be second best? To anyone?
He can't keep a wedding vow to his multiple wives, but I should trust him?I can already see Obama bragging of his long-standing marriage to Michelle.
The jewelry he bought Calista was paid for with HIS own money..that is his business.
I never said otherwise. I said that he has held the opinion that the federal government has the power to make me purchase it for him, though. How so, you may ask? If he is of the opinion that the federal government has the power to force me to purchase health insurance, it can force me to buy anything it wants me to buy. This man wants to be president of the Republican party?
His answer regarding Ryan is very explicit..have you read it or heard it? it is crystal clear.
He sure was doing a lot of apologizing for those comments that were so apparently crystal clear. He was tripping over himself to get on talk radio to spin away those comments.
Shall we go into his hissy fits made after traveling with President Clinton on Air Force One? He got off the plane and made a b-line to the press to bitch that Clinton had refused to talk to him. It took the White House no time to release this photo, which made Newt look like a whiny little brat.

They buried the lede.....Huntsman AGREES to a Lincoln-Douglas debate. I predict Huntsman will finish ahead of Romney in New Hampshire.
Nice head on that chicken...but it still looks plastic to me.
Yeah. Perry, granted, is not sufficiently conservative, but what the election of that radical showed me is that the MANAGEMENT aspect of it is at least as important as ideology.
“He also has the letter from his daughter on his site “
I wonder what would happen if Newt’s ex-wife made a campaign ad explaining what really happened, i.e., that (1) she was the one who requested the divorce, (2) her cancer wasn’t diagnosed until after divorce papers were drawn up, and (3) she didn’t actually DIE of cancer. We’d probably hear less, “Oh, and Newt served divorce papers on his wife when she was dying of cancer.”
He couldn’t even handle Bret Baier for 15 minutes. Imagine him having to deal with Newt? Newt probably will memorize all 59 points of Romneys plan and dissect each one without notes.
OHH Monk why you photoshop Mitt face on that poor chicken I did hear about the news ROFL
