With the Republican presidential primary appearing to have narrowed into a two-man contest, Human Events and Red State moved quickly to lock down a date for a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
The two organizations went so far this past Monday as to firm up the Annenberg Theater at the Newseum in Washington as the venue on Dec. 19 after another debate originally scheduled that day was canceled. For its part, the Newseum was excited to host the pre-primary forum.
There was just one problem. While Gingrich was ready to take his place on the stage, the Romney campaign politely declined in a series of mostly e-mail exchanges.
As Joe Guerriero, a Human Events editor, put it to RCP: Newt was all over it, and the Romney camp basically said no. It wasnt a harsh no, but it was a no.

Bigfoot dressed as a circus clown would have a better chance of beating President Obama than Newt Gingrich.
Newt has already announced his plans if The Messiah won’t debate him.
The man has a plan, has the brains to execute his plan and the experience to see it through to the White House.

That does not speak to the fact that the Tea Party was a movement to oust the corrupt Washington insiders for whom politics and election was more important than the welfare of America.
Newt falls smack into that description. I am not letting others’ opinions and endorsements replace my own thinking.
I don’t like either of these guys. But Romney’s fear of single combat shows him up, again, to be cowardly and and mentally vaccuous.
Being superficial and trite - it is important to me that people have a sense of humor.
Cain, Newt and Perry have self-deprecating humor. Bachmann, Santorum and Paul do not.
Romney has the most demonic smirk when he ‘laughs’. It cannot even be called laughter. He seems to have no joie de vivre about anything - just intensity for power. There is a meanness about him when he is challenged and I find it very disturbing.
