Cain: My wife didn’t know that I was giving money to my accuser ("Yes, getting out is an option")

Here’s the news people on Twitter are buzzing about from tonight’s raincheck interview with the Manchester Union-Leader. We already knew this, though — sort of. Cain told Wolf Blitzer on Monday, before we had heard Ginger White’s name, that his wife didn’t know White. (Skip to 7:30 of this clip.) That’s ever so slightly different from saying his wife didn’t know about White or that he was sending her cash, but c’mon: If she did know that, don’t you think he would have mentioned it to Blitzer as proof that their friendship was no secret?

Cain said that in about 70 text messages she sent him between Oct. 22 and Nov. 18, White was “asking for financial assistance. She was out of work and had trouble paying her bills and I had known her as a friend.

“She wasn’t the only friend who I had helped in these tough economic times, and so her messages to me were relating to ‘need money for rent’ or whatever the case may be. I don’t remember all the specifics.”…

“My wife now knows,” Cain said. “My wife and I have talked about it and I have explained it to her. My wife understands that I’m a soft-hearted giving person.”…

He said White did not threaten to go public with the allegation of an affair if Cain did not give her money, “nor was there any indication that there might be blackmail or anything like that…

Cain said he does not know why White has gone public with the allegation, “but I have very strong speculation that someone offered her a lot of money.

Supposedly she was desperate for cash, desperate enough that she’d risk ruining the marriage of a friend who’d been sweet enough to give her money by lying in exchange for a payout from some shadowy enemy — yet not so desperate that she’d try to blackmail Cain himself? If that’s true, she has a strange moral code.

Here’s the vid of the Union-Leader interview. Skip ahead to 22:00 and 46:00 for a few questions about White. Cain’s lawyer is pushing back by demanding copies of her phone records to try to prove that she was the one sending most of the texts, but even if that’s true, his polls are what they are. I can understand him wanting to stay in the race on principle if he’s innocent, but his support is now a wasting asset; if he wants to exchange it for something valuable, the sooner he does it, the better. Romney’s desperate to keep Cain’s supporters from bolting for Gingrich so he’d probably offer Cain something in return for an endorsement (Cain endorsed him in 2008, remember), but … what could he offer? A cabinet appointment or ambassadorship requires Senate approval, which would mean new scrutiny from Democrats of the harassment charges, White’s allegations, etc. Plus, endorsing Romney this time would complicate Cain’s brand as an authentic grassroots conservative anti-establishmentarian and he needs that brand to protect his chances at a show on Fox or a new talk-radio gig. Then again, endorsing Gingrich wouldn’t do much for his brand either. If he doesn’t endorse Mitt, then who? (Speaking of Newt, check out our very clever frontrunner turning a question about Cain into a play for social cons.)

One thing Romney has that Cain increasingly needs is campaign cash. According to WaPo, the Cain Train is almost out of steam financially, to the point where they can’t afford to run ads rebutting all the charges against him. If he ends up in debt, Romney could promise to erase his liabilities in return for an endorsement and some appearances on the stump. Obviously, though, that’ll matter much more to Romney when Cain’s still at 10-15 percent than when he’s at five. Tick tock. Click the image to watch.

Your insinuation of Cain not being smart is proof of your bias and agenda. Objectively his education and track record rebut your petty sniping.

Giving Money to a woman, behind your wife’s back, and responding to allegation as “its an allegation of consentual sex and is a private matter and the public and press should not investigate” ??

Dude, I don’t care if you screwed around with this woman or not, you need to just go home, you are clearly not remotely ready for prime time. Thank God, you are getting washed out now instead of later.

I hope folks will STOP projecting greatness onto mediocrity or worse in this election. We all want a new Reagan, but, there isn’t one in this bunch, and glomming onto the latest pretty face that tells you what you want to hear, but brings nothing to the table is foolhearty.

This is now a 2 man show, Newt and Romney. Don’t have to like it, but that’s reality. If the Tea Party wants a reaganesque candidate, they need to start culling the herd for 2016 and 2020 NOW, and figure out who that is going to be, work to promote them, and properly vet them, so that when those cycles come around there is someone that is more conservative, and CAPABLE on the ballot. In this election there isn’t.

I don’t want someone, that just shows up out of the blue and says some things I’d love to hear.. I want someone who A) HAS WON AN ELECTION AND KNOWS POLITICS B)NOT ONLY KNOWS POLITICS, BUT SHOWN SOME APTITUDE FOR IT C) Believes in the simple fundamental basics that Government should stay out of the peoples wallets and off their backs as much as possible D) Is not an ideologue, but a practicle leader, who uses this fundamental principle to guide them, but is not so ideological that they deny the very reality of how politics works.

I honestly don’t know if the Tea Party is capable of delivering on D, but we shall see.

No, you just need to be more astute in your choice of candidates and the political process.

Cain was a neophite, had no chance of winning anything, has never won a campaign in his life, and has no political experience. Backing such a candidate for the presidency is throwing money away, period. No person, EVER has won the presidency with such a resume’ let alone doing so in modern times of instant global information. Someone like this has ZERO chance of winning a national election. The fact Cain demostrated he could not think on his feet, coordinate and handle the pressures of a national campaign, are not suprising at all, in fact they are predictable.

Thomspon had political experience, but clearly his heart was not in the race, as well as, while he delivered nice political speeches that rallied the loyal, he had a governmental record that was more like McCain, which was what everyone didn’t like to begin with. You don’t luck or half ass into the presidency, you have to want it, and Thompson didn’t, and his rhetoric while inspiring deviated greatly from his record, and offered at the end of the day, little difference between himself and other candidates (especially the one who wound up witht he nomination). Lets not even get into the fact he came into the game late.

I like Thompson and Cain, they are nice enough guys, and they are on our side, even if some folks would argue that, but neither of them had a snowballs chance of winning the nomination, let alone the White House. Thompson had a better shot by far than Cain, but even he was the longest of long shots.

Do not stop donating, just be more astute and detached when evaluating candidates that you give money to. Money alone cannot make an unelectable candidate electable.

All the left has to do is make a suggestion. That is what they do best, true or not. I am more worried that we are being railroaded again by having to except candidates chosen for us. We are way too busy concentrating on people that have been chosen for us instead of candidates we really want. Again, where are the conservatives?

Are we electing a new MSM next year? I wish, but no.

It will be the same (worse) leftist slimeball media machine in 2013.

We need a leader who can competently deal with that FIFTH-COLUMN as if they were (because they are) just as dangerous as the Chicoms, Muslim fanatics, etc.

If he can't find his tail now, we don't need him as the standard bearer for conservatives.

[It is obvious the wife is a very understanding woman to have also given her gifts.]

You misunderstood the last sentence in post #94. It meant that Cain was hiding the gifts [he gave] from his wife. The wife did not even know about her.

“Herman isn’t as smart as he first appeared.”

Herman never appeared smart.. desperation and projection by folks onto him was all he ever had, and that quickly fell away when he had to perform. Had such challenges faced another, we wouldn’t have the fool in the White House we do now, but the press gave him a pass, that will NEVER happen to a Republican candidate ever.

I understand we are all desperate for someone Reaganesque to show up, but its not going to happen in 2012, and pinning your hopes of it on an empty suit just because he says things you like to hear is foolish.

Reagan was a once in a lifetime president, I really doubt we will have anyone like him again in my lifetime. I would love to see someone better than Newt or Romney that has a shot at winning the White House, but reality is, these 2 are the only two people, and always were the only 2 people in this field who realistically could do the job. They may not do it the way I would prefer, but I know they can “do the job” not just sit in the chair and be run over by it, like the fool in the White House now.

Now, the question is, Newt or Romney, I know for me, of those two Newt wins hands down. I wish there was someone more conservative who could do the job running, but there isn’t, pure and simple.

Tea Party wants the White House, the need to be getting folks elected to office at lower levels and groom them to higher office, you aren’t going to just ordain someone to the White House out of the blue, can’t and won’t happen folks.

Adultery does matter.

It’s one thing to have it discovered on the campaign trail.

It’s another thing to have it be an old marriage that went up in smoke. (Half of America or more is divorced.)

And then when people discover it wasn’t with the wife on the deathbed, and that she requested it, and that she was his high school teacher, then it begins to seem that maybe there had been something “wrong” about this marriage from the start.

I didn't say it was sexual but I am neither naive nor a child. Any thirteen year "friendship", if that's the term that you prefer, that a married man has with a single woman(who is not a co-worker) that involves an exchange of cash and that the married man conceals from his wife simply stinks.

You may draw your own conclusions - I have mine.

You are right, that’s a betrayel of the relationship at the very least ... Cain is done, it’s over for him.

Maybe he didn’t consider a non-sexual affair (according to him) as a skeleton. It’s another matter not telling his wife, but that should be between him and his wife. And if Mrs. Cain has had enough, then, and only then, should he drop out.

I doubt very much that sex was never a part of the equation between Cain and White.

As my father, the good reverend was fond of saying...."People are predictable and two plus two is, in my experience, always four."

I don’t listen to the suggestions of the left - I know how corrupt they are when it comes to just about anything.

I am listening to Herman Cain trying to explain to the country that he had a 13 year “friendship” with a woman, gave her money, and his wife didn’t know about it.

I just find that very odd.

I am looking at voting for a Conservative Candidate for President. Obama is a better husband and father than Newt Gingrich. However, Obama is a Marxist. Newt is a liberal in many of his policies - immigration and health mandates being the two major areas that will cost taxpayers Billions.

Neither Obama or Newt can be trusted to do what they say they are going to do. They are both interested in their own political futures rather than the future of this Country.

There are a lot of similarities between Newt and Obama. My observations say they are both very narcissistic. The definition according to Wikipedia:

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

“A married man just does not give money without wife’s knowledge and approval to an attractive single woman for no reason.”

That’s horse puckey...

I’m 65 and have been married to the same woman for 43 years. However I have probably a dozen platonic women friends. Half of whom I dated before I was married.

If one of them ask me for a couple hundred bucks because they needed to pay the rent or something, of course I would give it to them - and I’m not rich...

If I won the power-ball, I would likely give all of them something nice. And, NO, I wouldn’t feel obligated to tell my wife...

What you say has merit; however, Cain has explained he did not have an affair with Ginger. My father helped people all of the time and he didn’t consult my mother on every one of them. How about the fact that Ginger had a lesbian affair for the same amount of time, 13 years. Don’t you find that odd?

Of course you listen to the left. We all do or we would have a hell of lot more conservatives in office from the ground floor on up. We should be ignoring the left when they try to stop us.

I think the left took Ginger’s 13 year affair with the lesbian and did a little transferring. Like making it look like Cain was having the affair with Ginger instead of Ginger and the lesbian having the affair.
