Newt Gingrich, whose GOP competitors accuse him of being soft on illegal immigration, pledged Thursday, if elected president, to build a double fence along the Mexican border during his first days in the White House.
We havent been able to build a fence on the border because we have not been a serious country, the former House speaker said at an event in Iowa, before he signed his name to the pledge sponsored by the activist group Americans for Securing the Border.
Gingrich has maintained that the border needs securing but has also suggested that some of the 11 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S. be permitted to stay in the U.S. legally. Some of his competition, including Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, has called that policy amnesty.
Bachmann was the first candidate, and is the only other 2012 contender to sign the pledge.
The candidates pledge to support and speedily expedite the construction of a date-certain, secure multi-layered fence (fence locations to be specified

For Newt it’s to keep the illegals IN the country. LOL
To keep aliens IN!
When newts lips are moving he is either eating or lying, he does nothing halfway.
I’m not buying it. He’s still a pro-amnesty RINO.
Newt’s policy on dealing with illegals is the best one I have heard. It is outlined on his site and well worth the read for anyone interested.
BTW..what is Bachmanns plan on deporting millions of illegals? or any other candidates plan on how this feat would be accomplished other than get rid of the “magnets” which Newt also supports
I see your denial continues. No matter what Newt does it will be wrong in your book. You are becoming a ridiculous caricature of yourself. I do note that Newt has signed the pledge and Cain hasn’t. Wanna bet what happens first - Cain signs a pledge to build a fence or drops out of the race? Actually, I’ll bet you come up with a reason why building a fence is a horrible idea. It has to be if Newt is for it, right? Yeah, until Cain says “good idea, Newt. Can I borrow your pen?”
ENDING THE DISHONESTY: THE WAY FORWARD ON BORDER CONTROL AND PATRIOTIC IMMIGRATION by Newt Gingrich (April 26, 2006)
a fence? why? He’ll keep the gates wide open.
How about bringing the troops back home and lining them up on the border too !!! Why can’t that be in the pledge?
Just build the damn fence..
Isn’t that what his Rino buddy McCain said?
You are not planning on voting anyway. That makes your opinion about as relevant as a pet rock.
...Because apparently his positions on “legalization” can somehow be covered up by how he sugar coats it and pledges he signs? I mock it because it’s so transparent. He’s kissing up to us while at the same time holding a position that is utterly contradictory and unacceptable.
How about instead of trolling me around the forum, you tell me why we need to legalize these people to begin with? Why not ENFORCE the law, when we know that by doing this simple thing, illegals deport themselves? Why are we rewarding illegal behavior? And why do you believe that, somehow, only the illegals who have committed minor identity fraud and have been working for 25 years will be the only ones to get “legalized”?
False. You haven't given the matter enough thought.
I'll vote. But it won't be for a pro-amnesty RINO like Newt.
Arizona. Alabama.
And a welcome mat rolled out.
Gigrich only signed the pledge, he did not write it, but should I take this to mean you're a Ron Paul supporter?
