A New Jersey man in his mid to late 50s has been arrested in connection with the smashing of windows in Highland Park Tuesday night. Richard Green of New Brunswick was charged with five counts of criminal mischief, with a maximum penalty of up to 18 months in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
However, if officials file hate crime charges against him, he could face at least 10 years in prison. In a statement, police said that the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office was notified of the circumstances of the incidents, and they will decide on whether to upgrade the charges.
Green was being questioned in connection with incidents of window smashing on Raritan Avene and on the Rutgers University campus – where windows of the campus' Hillel House and Chabad House were broken Sunday night. Police are trying to determine Green's motives, and if he acted alone or with others. Officials were quoted as saying that he was sent for psychiatric evaluation.

This is one of the few types of crime where I think a "hate" crime sentencing is appropriate. This is obviously different than a kid randomly throwing a brick through a window in it's impact on the community. Of course imo throwing a brick through a window during a riot or an Occupy meeting has the same impact, and merits a more serious charge. That won't happen, politically correct mayhem you get off free.

4 people convicted in KY (or TN) last week for similar crimes. Anglo names. I wouldn’t assume they’re not Muslim. No difference to me, regardless of their faith they don’t like me, but from a security perspective we should get over the idea that Muslims look only like Arabs (who look like Jews, Greeks, Italians etc) and dress like they’re goint to the camel races instead of killing infidels. Or don’t drink or go to strip clubs. This guys actions speak for themselves, whatever his faith is. Though I acknowledge there is only one faith I can think of that would embrace his crimes.

When does this senseless, madness stop? We are all Americans and should be united against those who try to divide us. We had a happy country. Now it is ugly, vile and sinful, mean and nasty. It has to stop. We the people need to bring it back together again.
NO, we are Not All Americans. We have illegal people from various countries, here to inflict harm on the American Idea. We have legal Non-American citizens here from various middle eastern countries who want this country to revert to the mid-1500s, as the country they left, worshipping a common curr who did not like women and loved to molest children.
We, unfortunately, have allowed our country to accept people of various contagious forms of illnesses never before accepted. We now have social disease we never had before the 1970s.
Yes we had a country who followed rules set forth by previous generations, but the 1960s came about and we had the likes of aids spreaders who formed a strong union with certain elected to allow aids patients into the country, then followed TB patients, small pox and many other diseases never before allowed and diseases erradicated, but now spreading across our country. Because of the less than strong hearts of elected Americans, we have the likes of Jane Fonda and her following who have gotten by with treason and American POWs murdered because of her and the compliance with the enemy.
We do have American who love and will protect this country with what we have left, but we do have a strong group living in this country who are trying to destroy it. Look to the present administration.

My first reaction on reading the postings agreed with yours. However, in the local CBS on-line article, in the comment field, a rabbi states Mr. Green is Jewish, has a history of mental illness and is known to the shop keepers.

I don’t think it matters. I don’t know if he’s Jewish or not, but if he is that doesn’t change the nature of the crime, it’s one of intimidation, not vandalism. As to mental illness, there are procedures to deal with that, if he’s legally insane, he’ll be hospitalized.
