Jon Huntsman: Defining "Conservative"
The Politico ^ | November 30, 2011 | Daniel Allot

Posted on 11/30/2011 8:28:51 PM PST by St. Louis Conservative

What do you call a family-oriented former governor who supported and signed every pro-life bill sent his way, passed the largest tax cut in his state’s history, enacted the most expansive school voucher program in the nation and presided over what was cited as one of the most business-friendly states?

Many Republicans, and much of the media, call this a “moderate.” That is how they are labeling former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who officially entered the GOP presidential fray on Tuesday. Whenever Huntsman’s name is mentioned, it is usually accompanied by that most unhelpful of primary season adjectives. But while Huntsman’s temperament is moderate – his record isn’t. Indeed, his policy positions should endear him to most conservatives.

Huntsman has a strong pro-life record, both as a chief executive, signing several innovative pro-life laws as Utah’s governor from 2005 to 2009, and as a private citizen, as a father of seven, two adopted. He also supports gun rights and has an unwavering commitment to Israel.

Huntsman signed the largest tax cut in Utah history. During his tenure, the state was named the nation’s “best managed” by the Pew Center on the States, and cited as one of the top three states in which to do business. Forbes labeled Huntsman’s Utah the most “fiscally fit” state for its combination of low debt and taxes and low unemployment.

When Huntsman left office, he had an 84 percent approval rating among Utah voters. Polls show that he is still well-regarded by his former constituents — which can’t be said for some other former governors in the GOP race.

On the hustings, Huntsman has already voiced support for Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan, and has pledged to repeal Obamacare.

Fine Noob.

Explain why Huntsman, alleged “conservative” wants America to hand the future to communist China.

That’s his position: “Free trade”.

Explain away, noob.

Thanks. (where’s that popcorn?)

Ummmmmmmm......................no. In interviews I’ve found him to be a condescending elitist.

Elitist? Naw, how could former Obama administration official Jon Huntsman Jr. be an elitist? Why, if he's an elitist then why did I see Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild talking him up on Fox News?

Oh wait...

Well, this is humorous! I have not found any other articles that try to portray Huntsman as anything other than a normal GOP liberal insider. Actually, he would have to lean a bit more right to qualify for a left leaning Republican.

It's my position too, but I don't support Huntsman.

And let’s remember, Huntsman was governor of Utah, a pretty conservative state to begin with. He never had to do anything but go along to get along. He never had to lead and would likely follow the other elitists in Washington which means - Liberal.

My apologies on the date. That was an error on my part. The article is indeed from June, however that doesn’t make it any less true today.

Why would you want to voluntarily hand the world’s future to communist China?

(that’s what “free trade” is - don’t see anyone on either side, trying to fix that)

You’re for the Chicoms then.

Don’t pretend otherwise.

Huntsman would CRUSH Obama in the general. The left would love to see Cain, Perry, Bachmann, or (to a lesser degree) Mitt, and Newt run against Obama. They would be easy to defeat. Huntsman can win and win big....and he happens to be as conservative as anyone in the field, with the possible exception of Michele Bachmann.

Huntsman would be defeated by Obama.

All Obama would have to point out is, Huntsman agrees with him on every issue. Just not as strongly.

So why vote for Huntsman?

Seriously. He’s a nothing. He’s not for balanced trade, even though he was AMBASSADOR to the nation cheating at trade.

He really hasn’t stated any positions at all.

He’s nothing but a professional politician.

Very disappointing. I’d far prefer Donald Trump.

I don't, and that's an absurd assertion.

No, I'm for freedom.

Have you ever heard the phrase "logical fallacy"?

I am not a fan or supporter of Huntsman. But I still think any one of the 8 candidates you see debating on TV are far-far-far better than the secular socialist in WH.

My order of preference is...not that it would make any difference to you...Cain, Bachmann, Perry. I do not have much use for the rest.

As for Huntsman, I suppose he was a popular governor in Utah serving 2 terms. I cringe at his man made global warming beliefs and his negativity on DOMA.

You just made a very profound statement! And that is exactly why it is imperative to pick a person with unshakable core beliefs. Mitt & Newt scare me for that exact reason. Both have been on opposite sides of so many issues. Who knows where their ego’s will take us once they move into the top job.

Huntsman : “Cap-and-trade ideas aren’t working; it hasn’t worked, and our economy’s in a different place than five years ago.”

He may be reassessing his position on global warming after the politics of the IPCC have been increasingly exposed. But really what difference does it make what he thinks about global warming except that he is against Cap and Trade ?

As Ambassador to Singapore and Ambassador to China, Gov. Huntsman helped expand markets for American exports - and I believe that exports to China actually did show an increase under his tenure.

Jon is one of the few candidates advocating economic growth through free market job creation and tax reform rather than reduction in the size of government. Although I have to admit I wish he had stuck with the Chinese currency manipulation bill, however symbolic the effect.
