Gingrich Surging Among California Republicans

Newt Gingrich's surge in the GOP presidential primary extends to the delegate-rich, but late in the calendar, state of California, according to a new Field Poll released early Wednesday. The poll shows the former House speaker in a virtual tie with Mitt Romney for the top spot among Golden State Republicans, typically a more moderate breed.

Romney leads the GOP field with 26 percent, according to the poll, followed closely by Gingrich, with 23 percent. That is well within the poll's margin of error of +/- 5.7 percent.

No other candidate earns double-digit support. Embattled businessman Herman Cain is at 9 percent, followed by Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, with 5 percent.

California should be broken up into 5 states.

Question. For purposes of the GOP nomination, are individual states awarded votes based on the total population or the number or Republicans in the state? States like CA, VT, MA, RI should have less influence in selecting the GOP nomination than states with larger proportions of Republicans.
In fact, one could argue (but I’m not advocating this) that a state like CA should have virtually no say in the GOP nominee because they always vote for the Dem president in the general.

I am not in CA, but I support Herman. the interesting part about these polls, and most importantly IA, is that it takes organization to win. Newt failed to get on the MO ballot and his ground game nationally is weak. We shall see what happens...bu I think Cain will rise like a Phoenix.

That would make you two of three, then. Actually, there are many more of us here than you might realize. All four of my children vote Conservative (three reside within California. The fourth is in Afghanistan, but assigned to Scofield Barracks, Hawaii). I work with a number of people who are also conservative - unfortunately, there are many more I work with who are not.

What can you expect from a (Left)Field poll, in a thread posted by a Noo Yawker, about California?

They likley conducted the poll in Frank Ogawa Plaza, where Noot’s cawkus meets to excrete.

Please know I meant no disrespect to either of yall.

Grew up out there, and am appalled at what passes for “the west” now. Hope it will still be possible to exercise the pedal franchise in the future.

Cheers

"What’s a “California Republican?" On the average, it's someone well to the left of the average dumbocrat.

California's a lost cause. Has been for decades.

Anyone who would argue that should be pilloried. But here's a clue for you, even when CA had its primary moved to Super Tuesday back in 2008, it had no real effect on the contest. Now the primary is moved back to June. There's no chance CA will have any say whatsoever in the GOP nomination. California is nothing but an ATM for both parties.
