..The Texas governor has faced criticism from Republican rivals like Mitt Romney for being "soft" on illegal immigrants, because those who live in Texas can attend state universities at the same cost as other Texas residents.
Perry, who made the remarks while campaigning in New Hampshire with a controversial Arizona sheriff, said that if elected he would immediately order the deportation of any illegal immigrant detained in the United States.
"My policy will be to detain and deport every illegal alien who is apprehended in this country," Perry said. "And we'll do it with an expedited hearing process so that millions of illegal aliens are not released into the general population with some hearing date down the road."
Non-violent illegal immigrants who are arrested are currently allowed to stay in the country while awaiting deportation hearings in immigration courts.
Perry was briefly among the front-runners for the Republican primary nomination after entering the race in August, but has been hit by attacks on his immigration views and stumbled in a series of poor debate performances.
Recent polls show Perry running in fourth or fifth place among Republicans nationally, and about sixth in the relatively moderate state of New Hampshire.
But ongoing problems with sexual misconduct accusations against rival Republican Herman Cain could arguably encourage some conservative voters to take a second look at Perry.
Perry's endorsement by Joe Arpaio, who claims to be "America's toughest sheriff," was designed to rebut criticism of his immigration policies.
Arpaio has drawn national attention for creating all-volunteer armed posses to sweep for illegal immigrants in Arizona's Maricopa County..

Maybe Perry is not the worst. But to say he will deport is BS. And that is all it is. And he is not serious about immigration or he would lead his houses to pass a bill like Alabama’s.
If he incapable of leading his own houses, how is he going to lead the DC Hacks in Washington?
If those numbers are True, legal Texans will be bred out in a decade. Texas will end up like CA.
Would he have felt as comfy in front of the Council of Concerned Citizens? With cameras?

Get Perry to support the following and he automatically becomes the front-runner overnight:
1. Use E-Verify for all employment and all acquisition of Social Services
2. Build a complete border fence, not just strategic, but complete.
You're absolutely right! I've been trying to tell folks, but when they get their sights set, they refuse to listen to those who have experienced Perry's flip flops, lethargy and double talk.
He’s already pledged to build the fence if elected.
I’m sure he will implement e-verify also.
I cannot believe the disrupters on this thread.
Their candidate is gone, yet they try to tear down the one viable, conservative candidate left standing.
Guess they want Romney.
Or Newt.
Uh oh! It appears that this law may not be good for Bama’s foreign auto manufacturing if the Mercedes Benz executives are arrested. You know there are often unintended consequences for laws written purely on emotion and not reason.
I guess I am one of the disrupters you speak about.
I have no candidate. I frankly don’t think it will matter if a republican is elected President. It’s my opinion we have already passed the point of no return for this country.
However, I do take issue with candidates who say one thing and do another.
My specific gripe with Perry is that he says he will deport.
If he were really serious about immigration, there are many things he could do. Such as lead his own Texas houses into passing Alabama like immigration laws.
And if he is incapable of leading his own Texas houses, how is he going to lead the Hacks in DC?
He may be a decent governor, but he is not serious about immigration.
You are right in there are positives and negatives for all decisions. Do I want a legal American who is on the verge of losing his house, his car and his family and who is willing to do a job that an illegal is doing now, to have that illegals job? Yes.
If you don’t have a candidate, then you DO have a candidate: Obama.
Get outta here.
Problem is, all too many FReepers look far, far from serious, as they obsess over immigration, so called - and ignore the fact we are witnessing the literal disappearance of the Caucasian race. THAT is really serious. Americans are not replacing themselves, nor are the white Europeans, which have an even lower birth-rate than US Caucasians.
The birth rate for Caucasian woman in the US is very far below the sustaining rate of 2.1 per adult female - hence if all immigration were somehow terminated, this nation would die faster than the dying European nations, which are being propped up by Muslim immigration.
The 'prop' here has been from both Muslim and Hispanic immigration - meanwhile the death of the Caucasian race continues apace.
Seems to me conservatives should be more concerned about the fact that they aren't replacing themselves than they are about 'immigration.' If we can't take care of the business of maintaining even a replacement population, then how can we expect to see a strong United States of America continue to exist?
Fix that problem and the problem caused by 'immigration' would soon disappear. I saw the results of the 'baby boom' after WWII first-hand - and we all need to see that again, because it would seriously help shut down the flow of 'immigrants' in the most beneficial way.
There is a sort of a white baby boom going on, but you’re correct: demographics is destiny.
Ignore it at the nation’s peril.
I’ll reply to you once on this.
The Arizona and Alabama laws will not stand. They are being fought tooth and nail by Obama and the feds and judges.
They only end up costing the state money.
Immigration reform must come from the top and if Perry is elected, he will do it.
I posted an article here yesterday about the fence in Arizona, how much it has cost and how ineffective it is.
You might read it, it’s called Blind Spot. You can find it on the sidebar.
