..The Texas governor has faced criticism from Republican rivals like Mitt Romney for being "soft" on illegal immigrants, because those who live in Texas can attend state universities at the same cost as other Texas residents.
Perry, who made the remarks while campaigning in New Hampshire with a controversial Arizona sheriff, said that if elected he would immediately order the deportation of any illegal immigrant detained in the United States.
"My policy will be to detain and deport every illegal alien who is apprehended in this country," Perry said. "And we'll do it with an expedited hearing process so that millions of illegal aliens are not released into the general population with some hearing date down the road."
Non-violent illegal immigrants who are arrested are currently allowed to stay in the country while awaiting deportation hearings in immigration courts.
Perry was briefly among the front-runners for the Republican primary nomination after entering the race in August, but has been hit by attacks on his immigration views and stumbled in a series of poor debate performances.
Recent polls show Perry running in fourth or fifth place among Republicans nationally, and about sixth in the relatively moderate state of New Hampshire.
But ongoing problems with sexual misconduct accusations against rival Republican Herman Cain could arguably encourage some conservative voters to take a second look at Perry.
Perry's endorsement by Joe Arpaio, who claims to be "America's toughest sheriff," was designed to rebut criticism of his immigration policies.
Arpaio has drawn national attention for creating all-volunteer armed posses to sweep for illegal immigrants in Arizona's Maricopa County..

The legislature could have, but did not when they met this spring. Perry called them back for a special session to pass an anti-sanctuary city law, and they failed to do that much. When the in state tuition for illegals passed, a large majority of the state legislature voted for it. I am disappointed by that, but the Texas legislature is who Perry has to work with.
Hey, that’s a nice photo! Listened to Perry on Hannity while driving home. I like him.
It took Gov. Perry 6 years working with the Texas legislature to get the PHOTO voter ID bill passed so he could sign it. Now Eric Holder is “looking” it over.
With no teeth -- with the asking of legal status of students blocked.
First deal with false statements about what a governor can and can’t do.
Second, we are not a dictatorship, we have a legislature. They are very, very independent minded in what they decide to do, when and how.
Third, we are Texas, we are not any of these other states. We chart our course on issues, not theirs.
We support their rights to enact laws, and we have joined in lawsuits supporting their rights. We do not tie ourselves to what they do, just support their rights. States rights.
I don’t have to make excuses.
I’m pro Perry as by far, by very far and away, the best choice and the most credentialed one running against Obama.
Not a one of the others is anything but totally imperfect.
Just as my candidate is. But my candidate offers the best of the bunch we have running right now.
Extremely proud of that.
So why doesn’t he keep bringing the bill back up?
Excuses, excuses.
CA is overrun, and lost for good. Texas is not far behind
in the same fate.
I understand quite well the process. That’s why I said LEAD, which means lead the state houses.
If he can’t lead his own state houses, how is he going to lead the DC Hacks in Washington?
However, the Feds currently would not recognize that arrest, and the Governor certainly cannot jail them, try them or deport them for being illegal aliens - this is information in the original article.
Current practice by the Obama Administration indicates that the Feds would release the illegal aliens and sue the Governor and Texas. And probably give them temporary visas, since that's what they're doing with the illegal aliens they catch and release at work places: "In effect, the Obama Administration has resumed the catch and release policy by deciding to provide work permits to illegal immigrants apprehended during worksite enforcement raids for the duration of the case against their employers." Take a look at the Obama administration's restrictions on section 287(g) and local law enforcement agencies:
On July 9, 2009, the Obama Administration caved in to these demands and announced plans to make the MOAs "more uniform." However, the announced changes go to the heart of the program and will disrupt any real attempt to enforce the law. The changes include:
"Forcing local law enforcement agencies to pursue all criminal charges. The new MOAs would require law enforcement to prosecute illegal immigrants taken into custody for all initial offenses. In practice, if law enforcement discovers that a person in custody is illegally in the U.S., the agency will often start removal proceedings instead of going through a costly and lengthy criminal process that would produce the same result. Requiring criminal prosecution would deplete the resources of local jurisdictions for no legitimate reason. In accordance with Americas long-standing commitment to federalism, the Obama Administration should respect the decisions and discretion of state and local governments and stop trying to micromanage them.
"Limiting the use of immigration checks to those arrested for major offenses. The new MOAs attempt to limit the use of immigration checks to those arrested for major offenses. However, most illegal immigrants who have been identified under the program commit misdemeanors, not felonies. Mohammad Atta, one of the 9/11 hijackers, was pulled over in a traffic stop two days before the 9/11 attacks. If the officer had inquired about Atta, he might have discovered that Atta was in the country illegally and might have prevented his participation in the attacks.
"Questioning the credibility and professionalism of state and local law enforcement. The announced changes insinuate that ICE should do more to prescribe how Section 287(g) participants use their authority. However, Americans have traditionally trusted law enforcement officers to enforce U.S. criminal laws. In contrast, the Obama Administrations changes would question the decisions of law enforcement to a degree that would dissuade them from participating in the program. The pattern emerging from the new MOAs suggests the Obama Administration does not trust the professionalism and legitimacy of state and local law enforcement agencies."
We don't pay for their education but nice try -- again.
On this side of the Rio Grande despite the protests of Tx ranchers, cutting off their water rights?
Down the middle of the river?
On the Mexican side of the river? (good luck with that).
Oh you mean laws where children are being bullied and where citizens are asked for their papers because they “look” like illegals?
We all know you seek no answers.
That's not what you're here for.
Boring, old, so repetitive... just about falling asleep here zzzzzzzzzzz
There’s a difference between border security and in country immigration policy.
Take a look at post # 51 in this thread.

Remember less than a few months ago whenever you posted something about Perry I'd post back a pimp chalice? Because, as I put it, you were "Pimpin for Perry". I'd bash Perry like crazy too.
Sorry about that. I have gotten to know Perry and the people around him. This happened after the brightest person I have ever met started to support Perry. A person that was a long time Democrat who has left the Democrat party. I am convinced that Perry is our best chance. This is his kind of campaign. He can go toe-to-toe with whatever his name really is. He has the structure and backing to beat the faker.
Ok, I’m boring. You are blind.
Of course, this is not costing the tax payers a penny, and it's all the Feds fault. Ya see, Perry is simply an innocent helpless by-stander.
So now there are different classes of illegal aliens? Spin, Perrywinkles, spin!
