With six shooting incidents, all nonfatal, the 2011 Wisconsin gun deer hunting season will go down as one of the safest on record, according to state officials.
"We're always striving for zero incidents, but this is looking like a phenomenal season from a hunter safety perspective," said Tim Lawhern, administrator of the Enforcement and Science Division of the Department of Natural Resources.
The traditional nine-day season ended Sunday. The DNR is compiling reports on safety, citations, license sales and deer registrations.
The agency reported it sold 620,534 gun deer hunting licenses through Sunday, 560 fewer than 2010.
If the preliminary information is confirmed, 2011 will be the second safest gun deer season in Wisconsin history. In 2004 the DNR recorded four shooting incidents (two fatal, two nonfatal).

If 650,000 people had gone shopping in Chicago, moe than 6 of them would have been shot.

BTW...can you crossbow hunt there? Or is it strickly bow.
I have kin in Wisconsin who got a doctor to sign off on his “bad shoulder” so he could get approved for crossbow. “Gun” season, at least in that part of WI, means shotguns.
Locally we just had a 15 yr. old shot and killed in a hunting accident over the weekend. The boy and his grandfather were squirrel hunting and a deer hunter who saw movement he says and just shot, hit the boy in the chest killing him.
None were wearing orange, first rule of hunting broken. Rule number two the 66 yr. old man shot at a target 50-75 yards away based on the fact he saw movement only and not identifying his target properly. My nine year old son when he heard that said aloud, you always have to know what your target is before firing and what is behind it...
My son went to school with the deceased kid. The deceased boys family is devastated, please pray for them.
mid September to early January for bow. Blackpowder till next week, and a 4 day gun doe season.
I will say a prayer for the family, sarge83. I am sure your son is affected by this tragedy as well.
Tragic! Shooting at movement through the trees is just insane. You would think a 66 year old would know better. Just think, he has probably been doing this his whole life and just now killed someone.
This is also the first deer season in at least 50 years where guns were allowed in vehicles without being in a case. I guess all those years of requiring guns in cases were just to make political points for gun control.
It is amazing how much of our life we have given up to the nanny state.
Proud aunt here of a 15-yr old niece who bagged her first deer. :o)
—not originally—when I was a kid (60 years ago) , “uncased gun in vehicle” was probably the most common game law violation prosecuted.
—it was more of a safety measure , similar to the prohibition on leaning a firearm against a vehicle—
The regulation was put into place to give the game wardens an easy way to ticket people that they thought were poaching. I would bet that the first case regulation was a product of the game warden's lobby.
