New Hampshire Union Leader Endorses Newt
American Spectator Blog ^ | 11/27/2011 | John Tabin

New Hampshire's largest newspaper, the Union Leader, endorsed Newt Gingrich today in a front-page editorial signed by publisher Joseph W. McQuaid. The paper's contrarian conservatism -- they rarely endorse frontrunners -- has a history of shaping the New Hampshire Republican primary. The Union Leader endorsement helped propel Pat Buchanan to a surprisingly strong (given that he faced a sitting president) 40% of the vote in 1992, and to an upset victory over Bob Dole in 1996. Their endorsement of John McCain (a striking departure from the UL's hostility to McCain eight years earlier) was a key factor in his New Hampshire victory in 2008, a remarkable comeback given that for much of 2007 McCain's campaign was left for dead by many observers...

*snip*

...Obviously other events in the coming weeks can swamp the effects of a newspaper endorsement, but if the Union Leader maintains a drumbeat of advocacy for their chosen candidate, as they sometimes do, it could help crystallize the race into a Romney vs. Gingrich contest.

The endorsement of the conservative newspapers’ editorial board places an exclamation point on Gingrich’s impressive surge from has-been GOP contender to front-runner, and sets him apart as the new anti-Romney candidate amongst his competitors. ” –Fox News

For Gingrich, the endorsement could have implications not only in New Hampshire, where Mitt Romney has enjoyed commanding leads all year, but also nationally, with the much-anticipated news further encouraging conservatives to rally around him as the main alternative to Romney.” – Salon

“It’s the most significant and impactful endorsement in the GOP race so far, and solidifies Gingrich’s standing as the alternative to Romney as the race heads into the final pre-Iowa caucuses stretch. . . .Romney . . . had worked hard to court Union Leader officials. ” –Politico

Etc. Etc. Etc.

The narrative is being written as we speak. Perception is reality.

This narrative is also being promulgated on the Sunday news shows.

Things can still change, but as I've been saying for a while, this race appears to be shaping up as a contest between Romney vs. Newt.

So who's it going to be? If folks are successful at taking out Newt, it will be Romney.

How very expected. Remember, the formerly conservative Union Leader endorsed McCain four years ago. Let me think... now was McCain the most conservative candidate going into NH four years ago or was he the “establishment” Republican? Hmmm.

The Union Leader is no longer conservative. Between two establishment RINOs, this endorsement is nothing to crow about.

I expect people who haven't kept up with the Union Leader will be reduced to useful idiots.

If we ever needed a Tea Party presence/uprising, it is now. We cannot let the media-political complex write this script for us. Way too much riding on doing it right this coming year. We can’t afford to be lazy or indifferent.

This is a clinton setup, same as mccain was in the last election. I don’t believe in coincidence. Now I know who sold their soul.

If we ever needed a Tea Party presence/uprising, it is now...

Which Tea Party? The theme used to be simple: Taxed Enough Already. Then the theme expanded and the tents got smaller. I'm for ABO so if someone who claims Tea Party membership wins the GOP nomination, I'm in.

The force is with Newt now.
He lacks some charisma but he will be the new Reagan.

But I think Bill saw what Obama has done and he was
very disappointed, and since it is less than 50% that
the democrats would push Obama out and replace him
with Hillary, Bill thought that the best for the country
is someone who can fix the economy, and that is Newt!

If you think clinton cares anything at all about this country, I have a bridge...
He just met with obama before o went to Hawaii and he went a happy man. Like I said, I don’t believe in coincidence.

maybe, but I just dont see Obama could win against Newt.
Newt would crush 0 just a gorilla on a turtle.
Probably Bill wanted Hillary to replace Obama?!

This is just New Hampshire being New Hampshire. This means nothing in reality. Their only intention is knocking the front runner (whomever that may be) down.

“So who’s it going to be? If folks are successful at taking out Newt, it will be Romney.”

AND, if it is Romney, it will ultimately be Obama and his country wrecking crew.

Go Newt......
