How Taya, who was born with Down's, became darling of the modelling world
UK Daily Mail ^ | November 26, 2011 | Frances Hardy

The camera just loves little Taya Kennedy. Wide-eyed, cheeky, engaged; she brims with the confidence of a natural performer. It is little wonder that she has taken the child-modelling world by storm.

The fact that 14-month-old Taya also has Down’s Syndrome is quite incidental. She was selected, not to fulfil a quota, tick a box or adhere to the dictums of some politically-correct code of positive discrimination. Taya was picked because, quite simply, she is a star.

‘Taya is an incredibly photogenic, warm and smiley child, and that shines through in her photographs,’ says Alysia Lewis, owner of Urban Angels, the prestigious UK model agency that has signed her up.

‘We only open our books twice a year and select just a few new children each season.

'The standard is high; the desire for places strong. Taya is one of 50 children we chose from 2,000 applicants.

‘That she has Down’s Syndrome did not enter the equation. We chose her because of her vibrancy and sense of fun. Not all children are comfortable in front of a lens and with a photographer looking at them — especially when they are so young. But Taya was so relaxed and happy. She was just what we were looking for.’

Retailers, including the Early Learning Centre and Mothercare, are already queuing up to feature the bright-eyed toddler in their advertising campaigns.

And Taya’s devoted mum, Gemma Andre, couldn’t be more proud.

'I always believed my daughter was stunning but I thought, “I’m her mum. I’m biased,”’ she says.

'When people say "poor you" I find it offensive and irritating,' said Taya's mother Gemma

‘When the agency rang me and said, “We want her on our books. She’s absolutely beautiful”, I was delighted.

This is such a heartwarming story. This little girl is beautiful, and to think that over 90% of these children are aborted is such a sad reflection on society. The parents sound wonderful; you can tell the love the mother has for her little girl. Maybe little Taya can change some hearts and minds.

What a sweet-looking child!

Reading the article, I’m astonished at all the garbage the mother says she was told by “experts.” I have several friends who have children with Down’s, and none of them has been extremely delayed in getting teeth, extremely delayed in walking, or several of the other issues the mother mentions. It’s as if someone read her a list of “All possible consequences of all possible non-fatal genetic anomalies.”

I’ve known one family for about six years, and I didn’t even realize their daughter, who is now 12, had Down’s, until when of my daughter told me recently. She seems so much like the other children, including mine, that I assumed her minor issues with speech and movement were a muscular condition such as mild cerebral palsy.

She is beautiful, just precious. So glad these children are being brought into the main stream. I have a downs grandson, he is so much joy to be around.

Unlike what they are thought to be, they are bright, able to learn, read, write and have a productive life, if they have loving parents as she does. God bless her, he has me by seeing this article.

God, in his wisdom, love and understanding sends this magnificent mother, a child of special note and purpose, and...these two human beings together will educate us all as to the achievements, health, happiness and successful life possible when individual force outdoes the collective, politically correct mantra, so easily swallowed by the weak sisters in our society. What a stunning beautiful little child we are all blessed to be among!!!

Sarah Palin must be smiling today!!! She deserves to!!! Yes, Ms. Palin, there is a special place for you in heaven and those like you!!! Never, never, allow the dregs of politics and this society drag you or your family down!!! It is they, that have the problem!!! They need and require our prayers, for it is them that are the lost sheep of the master, our Lord in heaven!!!

Hey DailyMail, what’s with switching the commonly understood use of single and double quotes?

Sarah Palin should have been so lucky to receive such praise for the birth of her son Trig..........Instead, she received derision, doubt and condemnation.

She’s gorgeous. I do see little ones with Downs in ads sometimes. I love it. Gd bless Sarah palin and Kelly hampton for showing how normal life with someone with an extra little chromosome is!

If you don’t follow kelle’s blog, it’s your loss ( more of a girl thing tho):.

Thank you for all of your lovely comments. Taya is my niece and Gemma is my little sister. They were also on Daybreak this morning as well which was brilliant. Gemma is such a good mum and believe you me when I say that Taya is amazing. When she first had to have her heart operation it was very scary but thankfully she came through and is the gorgeous little bundle of joy we get to experience on a daily basis. The doctors have said many negative things but my sister has ploughed on regardless and provides Taya with everything she needs from love through to support. I love them dearly just like the rest of our family and we are all extremely proud. May thanks once again, Craig
