For Perry, Life Was Broadened and Narrowed by the Military

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. — Rick Perry arrived on the campus of Texas A&M University in the tumultuous fall of 1968, cut his hair short, regulation military style, and donned a uniform. College students across America were rising up against the Vietnam War, but Mr. Perry, a member of the Corps of Cadets here, would not be among them.

“There will be no Columbia, no Berkeley here,” the university president, Earl Rudder, declared that fall. When a small band of antiwar protesters took to the steps of the Memorial Student Center, a building ...

“I don’t want to use the word ‘long-haired hippie types,’ ” said John Sharp, a Perry classmate and chancellor of the Texas A&M University system, “but a person who did not look like they fit into A&M said some kind of Jane Fonda-type stuff, and I remember Perry got up in his face pretty quick over that. He took exception to it, shouted the guy down.”

… It was an experience that both expanded and narrowed him, taking him to exotic locales while cementing his Texas roots and the traditional, conservative values that have been so central to his political identity. On Air Force missions overseas, he told students at Liberty University this fall, he had his first encounters with “oppressed people” — an experience that sharpened his idea of the United States as a beacon of democracy and helped convince him that Americans “cannot isolate ourselves within our borders.”

The college student who backed the Vietnam War is, at 61, the hawkish presidential candidate. Mr. Perry has called President Obama “irresponsible” for ending the Iraq war, urged the overthrow of the Iranian government — he would not rule out a military strike — and suggested he would deploy troops to Mexico to “kill these drug cartels” there.

Of course not, I mean he would have to go against his buddies in the NRA who depend on them to do the just above slave wages jobs. The food service industry is dependent on the illegals for the dirty nasty food processing work. It’s why our food is relatively cheap now.

How brainless you must be to think your foul mouth is reflective of anything other than your credibility, or lack thereof, and your inability to post w/o showing what a crass individual you are. Hilarious, actually. lol!

One of your rat-pack friends accused me of playing with sex toys, along with some other inappropriate things, a few weeks ago that was a lot worse than saying "A$$hole," A$$hole.

I judge you by the company you keep!

Saint, you ain't!

The one thing underwhelming is your candidate and your sense of honesty.

All you see is that the illegals are the cause of all our problems.

Wow. I thought you were just crazy. Now I know you are a LIBERAL and probably a bleeding heart one at that. What? You afraid you will lose your landscaper, your housekeeper, your nanny? What? You are the worst that we have on FREEREPUBLIC. We are trying to GET RID of illegals and you are supporting them. Forget you. I thought you cared about America and now I find out you are as Anti-American as you can get. I don’t care what you think of me for sure now. You can call me every word in the book....I don’t care. You are a liberal. You can’t be much worse than that.

Governor Rick Perry is a strong social conservative. He’s also most definitely a strong fiscal conservative. He is conservative on foreign affairs issues as well. Everyone knows those things.

Social Conservative
Fiscal Conservative
Conservative on Foreign Affairs

And let’s add his military experience and his love and respect for our troops too, just for the record.

It doesn’t get any better than that.

Rick Perry for president in 2012.

So you judge me because of the actions of those who you have deemed are my friends? That's about as kooky as trying to blame me for your gutter mouth.

I'm not sure how any of that is supposed to help your loser candidate RINO Rick pull his embarrassment of a campaign out of the gutter but if you think it will have at it.

Should we start calling Sheriff Joe Arpaio La Raza Joe now? On Monday he’s campaigning with Perry.

LOLOLOL you have a real reading comprehension problem and you are just plain flat stupid. I have enough sense to dig into just who is pushing the anti-illegal agenda and when I found out that it was a eugenics supporting, zero population growth, progressive white nationalist playing the tea party in order to push his agenda.

I’m not liberal by any stretch of the word. I’m just not one to follow the herd and can think for myself. That is something conservatives do. Rational thinking used to be something to be proud of. Too many “conservatives” today are falling for the populist pap that some of the candidates are spewing. Populism isn’t conservatism. It’s emotional driven soundbites that stir up the masses.

If you think calling me a liberal is going to make me cry, so sorry to burst your bubble, it’s not. I’m very conservative in the traditional sense. I want a small limited federal government. I want someone who understands the 10th amendment. I want someone who understands foreign policy but not one who will use our troops as pawns to get what he wants. I want someone who is a fiscal conservative that has a track record of cutting spending and cutting regulations so that businesses can operate profitably. I want a candidate who fully supports the 2A, the military, is pro life and has integrity.

psst, you might want to be careful who you call crazy. Unlike some of you here, I get off of FR and read sites that make fun of posters. When I first read about them I was curious and wanted to make sure my name didn’t show up. You might be shocked at how many times your name and posts are used. You all might want to consider tempering some of your more obnoxious posts. Remember these are public forums. Anyone can read here and post what is said elsewhere.

Apparently the way you see yourself is not how others see you.

Hint....you are not considered a very nice person by a lot of FReepers.

You are considered one of those who are responsible for a lot of the dissension and decline of FR. Infact, you are considered one of the worse...and haven't helped the candidate of your choice!...whoever that is!

One can display a nastiness without having a gutter mouth...and you have succeeded, Schweetie.

I should have finished saying that I backed off the rabid rhetoric a bit. I'm all for applying the laws on the books. If that is done the problem will pretty much take care of itself.
