The long stagnating Red Dawn remake looks set to finally see the light of day, with a designated release date on the horizon. According to Box Office Mojo, the film will hit screens on November 2, 2012 three years after filming wrapped.
A big black cloud has been hanging over Red Dawn in the form of the MGM bankruptcy saga, but, as reported here in September, independent distributor FilmDistrict struck a deal to finally get the film into cinemas, not matter how long it takes.
The film is the first foray into directing by former stuntman Dan Bradley, who once donned the hockey mask to play Jason Voorhees in Jason Lives: Friday The 13th: Part VI.
The movie is, of course, a remake of that cult classic from 1984 starring the late, great Patrick Swayze and a more innocent-looking Charlie Sheen (in his film debut) as the leaders of a bunch of teenagers who fight back when their small town in Colorado is taken over by Communist troops from the Soviet Union and Cuba.
It was made when the world braced for all-out warfare between the US and the USSR, at the height of the Cold War when such an invasion on American soil didnt seem that ludicrous. Nowadays it is a different story.
While the Red Dawn remake will follow very closely in the footsteps of the original, this time around it is the North Koreans doing the invading of the only genuine superpower left on the planet after filmmakers had originally slated the Chinese as the villains of the piece, but changed their minds in order to give the movie more appeal in the increasingly lucrative market of China.
The likes of Thor himself Chris Hemsworth (taking on Swayzes role), Adrianne Palicki (briefly, Wonder Woman), Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas and Josh Hutcherson will be doing the retaliating as the American teens.
Upon release on November 2, 2012, Red Dawn will be pitted against the comedy My Mothers Curse and Pixars animated Wreck-It Ralph.
Time will tell if Red Dawn is worth the wait. But at least its not yet another alien invasion movie. Right?
It’s prolly appropriate that Hollywood not offend the Chinese since in twenty years the Chinese will be running the State of California.
Here I was enjoying my Thankgiving apple pie and coffee.....
...Yea, we can't get them all and they'll be more to take their place. What happened to shock and awe?
It's funny, I find myself doing that even when carrying a cordless drill.
If they're ever in a position to get to LA, our military has obviously evaporated. The way North Korea took Seoul was by burning it to the ground with artillery and shooting anything that moved. LA gangs are intimidating only because the power of the state is sheathed in the name of individual rights and civil liberties. Against a real army, it would be a literal massacre.
Yes.. I agree with you... My post was just levity. However, in all seriousness.. I think the North Koreans are a kind of paper tiger. They only survived in 50’-53’ with the massive aid they received from China.
Today?.. They would cause havoc for two weeks, but if China did not back them up, they would peter out. We would have to fight a delaying action until they slowed and then use tech to overwhelm them.
This is not fantasy... if Obama has is way... he might want North Korea to be as strong as we are --- or should I say he wants us as weak or weaker then North Korea!!
They gave us a good run for our money with zero Chinese assistance, bottling up Walton Walker at Pusan, until MacArthur rolled them up starting with Inchon. Note that they were continuously pounded from the air by the Seventh Fleet and Air Force units, not to mention superior artillery forces with unlimited ammo, but the Pusan line resisted UN attack until Inchon. Today's NKPA is obviously better equipped than its 50's counterpart, and while it's no match for the ROK's, it would probably crush most Third World armies, let alone the LA gangs. I have no idea if today's North Koreans are anywhere near as stolid as their forebears in the 50's, but their infantry took punishing losses without flinching.
Jeez, why didn't they do that... just think of the $$$ they could make from the OWS Trust fund nuts...
Red Dawn was a good movie....this one I won't take the time to read the reviews... ,p>They even PC'd 'THE MUPPETS', by having an oil cmpany buying the Muppet place.
hollywierd...where movies are Rated 'PC'
“First, the original was one of the most moving motion pictures I’ve ever seen. I walked a mile back from the theater to my house, with my grown daughter who had seen it with me. Neither of us could say a word.”
I had the same reaction the first time I saw Red Dawn. I am disappointed that there is no blu-ray version.
Yes. You know the history well. I think the next time our air power will be our winning card. It would be hard to stop the Nork infantry. We only have 30K U.S. Army troops backing up the South Koreans.
But one thing that could be a difference maker is that it’s not entirely clear how well fed the North Korean army is. If they launch an attack with minimal food supplies and the soldiers are already hungry... they could lose the will to fight. Punishing and relentless air attacks on Nork supply lines will be key.
A very PC-looking cast, and not one of them with the charisma and presence of Patrick Swayze. They’re just the typical bland actors around today, all sporting that dirty, unwashed look. We have our unshaven skinhead type; our Hispanic; our unshaven geeky Beatles hair type; our muscular, darker skinned, shaved head black; our lighter skinned black; and one each brunette, redhead and blonde. Dollars to donuts the chick roles will have more testosterone in the movie than most of the guys. Who gets killed and who survives? Shrug.
The ROK's will grind up the NKPA and spit it out. The Korean War was a debacle because we denied heavy weaponry to the ROK's fearing (rightly or not) that they would invade the North and drag us into a war with the Soviet Union. If they had received the proper weaponry and training, the ROK's could conceivably have held their ground. Today, it's no contest. ROK materiel superiority simply dwarfs its NKPA counterpart. The ROK's might lose Seoul, because it's right across the border, but they would establish air supremacy almost immediately and interdict NKPA supplies coming south, thereby stopping the invasion in its tracks.
It's just a movie, after all. But I think many people have a mistaken view of the North Korean armed forces.
Our government doesn't have the integrity or gumption to stop the slow motion invasion by illegals that is taking place right now.
How would they deal with an invasion by the NORKs?
North Korea has a standing armed force of about 1,100,000, a claimed reserve of more than 8,000,000 and a paramilitary force of about 200,000. Their standing army is well trained, well armed and tough (Just ask the US vets from the Korean Conflict). The paramilitary forces are armed units that are not considered part of the formal military forces. As a comparison, the US has a standing armed force of about 1,500,000.
The concept of the movie poses an interesting dilema. How would the US government fight a large army ensconced in US cities and heavily populated areas? Would they be less or more concerned about collateral damage (civilian casualties) from fighting within the USA as they are in the mideast? Would every cartridge and shell fired, every missle released have to be approved by a JAG lawyer? Would the same restrictive rules of engagement apply?
Initially the US forces are probably better prepared and situated to defend Europe than defend an attack and invasion on our own sovereign territory. That is not to say they would't adjust rapidly - but the idea that fighting the NORKs would be like fighting the Duchy of Grand Fenwick are not realistic.
Why don’t they just have the Duchy of Grand Fenwick as the enemy?
I do have another scenario :)
The European Union goes through a severe financial crisis, one in which an economic collapse occurs. Nationalistic leaders like Anders Behring Breivik begin to emerge and restore financial order by seizing markets and putting the brakes on European financial markets. People see the likes of nationalistic leaders similar to Breivik as the saviors of Europe.
Russia joins forces with this new nationalistic EU and together plan an invasion of the US. This new alliance will then target China next.
China gets wind of EU/Russia plans to attack China. However, like the US before WW II, China is ill equipped to take on the new alliance. So, while the Alliance is preoccupied with defeating the US, China quickly builds her defense industry raising the defense spending from 2% of GDP to 50% of GDP.
The Alliance, after discovering China is intending to build up her military, begins a dual battle plan as they do not want to see China countering EU/Russian efforts. In the movie, all this would get conveyed to the teenagers in America through news reports, etc. But at first, they hear of severe defeats in China and wonder if they will have to take on the alliance alone.
While US forces and the "Wolverines" fight on, slowly news arrive of US forces repelling EU/Russia forces. But also, that a turn around had gone on in China which eventually lead to China cutting off EU/Russia reinforcements to the US. The "Wolverines" go on to defeat those remaining EU/Russian forces in North America.
I don't have the full script yet, but I'm working on it :)
There is one other twist I would add to the movie. The Wolverines encounter other American guerrilla groups. Except, they are fighting FOR the EU/Russia Alliance because the US and China are allies :) The Wolverines would question why these groups even exist but nonetheless are seen as treasonous enemies in the eyes of the Wolverines :)
