Influential congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) said Wednesday that presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's immigration plan was a "form of amnesty" and that he disagreed with it, adding to the chorus of critics from the right.
In Tuesday's GOP foreign policy debate, Gingrich said he would support an immigration policy that would allow illegal immigrants who had lived in the United States for a long time, obeyed the law, and paid their taxes to become permanent residents.
“I do not believe that the people of the United States are going to take people who’ve been here for a quarter of a century … [and] separate them from their families and expel them,” Gingrich said. “I do believe we should control the border. I do believe we should have very severe penalties.”
He went on to say that he believed his policy to be the "humane" one.

To the contrary, he refuses to call Newt's position a pretty word other than amnesty - which it is.
Words have meanings. The Democrats and the mainstream media have hijacked the language surrounding the immigration issue to the point that we had Michael Chertoff, the Secretary of Homeland Security and our nation’s top immigration official at the time, testifying before Congress using the term “undocumented workers” to describe illegal aliens.
John McCain and Barack Obama studiously avoided the term “amnesty” to describe their comprehensive immigration reform plans and despite the evidence, baldly declared that it was not an amnesty. Instead, they used such euphemisms as “getting to the back of the line,” “an earned path to citizenship,” and “coming out of the shadows.” The Democrats and pro-amnesty crowd know full well that the American people are against amnesty, hence the avoidance of the “A” word. Republicans need to develop their own immigration lexicon that cuts through this Orwellian use of language.
Definition: Amnesty, from the same Greek root as "amnesia," forgives past crimes and removes them from the record for future purposes. In the context of immigration, amnesty is commonly defined as granting legal status to a group of individuals unlawfully present in a country. It overlooks the alien's illegal entry and ongoing illegal presence and creates a new legal status that allows the recipient to live and work in the country.
The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986: The textbook example of an amnesty. The 1986 law's path to citizenship was not automatic. The legislation stipulated several requirements to receive amnesty, including payment of application fees, acquisition of English-language skills, understanding of American civics, a medical exam, and registration for military service. Individuals convicted of a felony or three misdemeanors were ineligible. No one disputes that this act provided amnesty. Supporters said it would be a “one-time” amnesty. It was estimated that one million would apply, but the true number turned out to be 2.7 million.
Then I would ask you and King, “What is your “workable” solution?

Advocate a pro-immigrant policy of low immigration. Conservative Republicans need to provide the American people with their own comprehensive immigration reform plan, i.e., give people a reason to vote FOR something rather than just attack the other side’s proposals. Such a plan should contain the following elements:
Formulate a merit based immigration system that brings in the skills and talents to keep us competitive in the global economy;
Reduce immigration levels based on need more closely approximating 300,000 a year;
Eliminate extended chain migration, i.e., family reunification, limiting it to the nuclear family;
Secure the border;
Enforce existing immigration laws to reduce the current illegal alien population and limit future illegal immigration, i.e., attrition thru enforcement. Enforcement would include: (1) ending the job magnet; (2) increasing coordination at the federal level by eliminating barriers to information sharing among agencies; (3) leveraging state and local enforcement resources; (4) fully implementing the US-VISIT Program to track and deport visa overstays; and (5) make mandatory and improve such programs as E-Verify and 287 [g] authority to assist employers and law enforcement in identifying illegal aliens;
Eliminate birthright citizenship and the visa lottery program;
Ensure that anyone who enters this nation illegally is not rewarded by being permitted to stay and work here; i.e., no amnesty;
Streamline the processing and adjudication of immigration cases;
Promote pro-immigrant measures that help newcomers assimilate and embrace the values and principles of our Founders and the Constitution.

Actually, the status quo is more workable than what Gingrich proposed. I think we need to consider at least two very simple steps. One, no Federal benefits, nada, zip, for anyone here illegally. No food stamps, no welfare. States will have an affirmative requirement to show that people drawing benefits from federally subsidize programs are in this country legally. (In hardship cases, we could furnish transporation to the country of origin.)
Second, require employers to document workers right to work in the U.S., with steep fines for employing illegals.

Why do so-called conservatives feel complelled to use these atctics whenever a favored politician proposes some asinine solution to the illegal immigration plague?
We went through this same bullcrap with George Bush and his "Shamnesty" propsal.

I have a problem with any immigration policy that penalizes employers and tries to turn them into law enforcement agencies, while doing nothing to stop government handouts to illegals. King’s plan fits this to a “T”.

The problem with Newt is that he thinks he is so smart we will all buy his BS. He really is so smart, he can’t make up his mind what he believes.
Thing is, most of us conservatives aren’t buying his arrogant elitism.

It is illegal to "knowingly" hire an illegal alien. The E-Verify program, now mandatory at the federal level and in states like AZ and Alabama, gives the employer an easy to use tool to cover his butt. It takes seconds in 98% of the cases. Cooperating with law enforcement is not making employers law enforcement agencies. There are only 7,000 ICE agents. We need cooperation at all levels of government and the private sector. It is in our national interest to do so with an estimated 8 million illegal aliens holding jobs while 25 million Americans are looking for fulltime emplopyment. Shutting down the job magnet is a big step forward in forcing illegals to self-deport.

What Perry and Gingrich are doing is rewarding illegal behavior. When you do that, you get more of it. Take a look at CA and its policies re illegal aliens. They are bankrupting the state. There is a big difference here in VA compared to MD and it has to do with how welcoming a state becomes to illegal aliens.
6.4% of MD's workforce are illegal aliens compared to 3.9% in VA. MD used to issue driver's licenses to illegals and they came from all over the country to get them. MD has just passed in-state tuition for illegals. This prompted a massive petition movement (yes, even in of the bluest of blue states) to get an up or down vote on in-state tuition in a 2012 referendum. The signatures were collected in record time and the legislation has been suspended pending the vote on the referendum.
People are sick of the costs of illegal immigration. Here in VA it is estimated at almost $2 billion annually. MD is going broke and is now talking about raising the gas tax by 30 cents over three years as they are now being overrun by illegals. And we just passed a milestone on November 6. Since 9/11 over 50,000 Americans have been KILLED by illegal aliens.

If someone has been in this country for 25 years and doing ok without being a citizen. Why would they become one now?
Gingrich is clueless on how illegals work and live in this country. He is merely throwing a sop for corporate welfare.... Amnesty = CHEAT LABOR that is what motivates Gingrich...and this BS on he is so humane what a load of BS.
