Newt Gingrich could face ‘Perry Plunge’ over immigration stance
Miami Herald ^ | 11.23.11 | staff

At the top of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich is poised for what some call the “Perry Plunge” for supporting part of the pro-immigrant DREAM Act.

Like former frontrunner Rick Perry, Gingrich became a target of criticism among fellow Republicans at Tuesday night’s nationally televised debate for saying that some people should be allowed to stay in the United States even if they’re here illegally.

(snip)

Gingrich’s comments were quickly blasted on conservative websites like Free Republic. The outrage with Gingrich underscored the danger of having a soft line on immigration as well as the tenuousness of leading the Republican field.

Create a path to earned legality for some of the millions of people who are here outside the law.

Any legislation that legalizes the status of someone here illegally to stay and work here is amnesty. Citizenship is another issue. More than likely, the ACLU and the Dems would take this to court because it is creating two different classes of LPRs.

There are currently anywhere from 8 to 12 million people living in the United States who entered illegally.

These people range from day laborers who arrived recently, to grandparents who have been paying taxes, supporting their families and obeying the law for decades.

If they are paying taxes, they must be working. It is illegal for an illegal to work in the US. Are they using a phony ID and SSN? What kind of taxes are they paying beyond payroll taxes? 47% of Americans pay no income tax.

We need a system that enforces the rule of law, ensures that those who broke the law pay a stiff penalty, but also acknowledges that it is neither optimal nor feasible nor humane to deport every single illegal immigrant.

We need a path to legality, but not citizenship, for some of these individuals who have deep ties to America, including family, church and community ties. We also need a path to swift but dignified repatriation for those who are transient and have no roots in America.

This is amnesty. It is also totally unenforceable. We tried amnesty 25 years ago. It didn't work. We now have three to four times as many illegal aliens. Newt's estimate of 8-12 million is way low. Even the USG estimate is 11 million. We already have existing laws that are not being enforced.

We don't need a new system. I have a far better plan than Newt's, which is just more use of Orwellian language to disguise an amnesty. McCain, Kennedy, and Obama are also against amnesty. Like Newt, they just define the word differently than what it really is.

Trust me it's easier and more fun for the MSM and talking heads to go with the sound-bite. Nobody is going to look closely at the details.

Yep I agree. Still, there are some who do look at the details and see that Newt's plan is possible to at the very least move the stalemate on immigration....otherwise our nation will continue to have an open door policy....and if obma wins that's a gurantee along with the invites to storm the country.

From Newt’s Plan:

“6. Create a path to earned legality for some of the millions of people who are here outside the law.

There are currently anywhere from 8 to 12 million people living in the United States who entered illegally.

These people range from day laborers who arrived recently, to grandparents who have been paying taxes, supporting their families and obeying the law for decades.

We need a process that can distinguish at the human level.

Congress must charge the Department of Justice to establish a “citizens’ review” process for those here outside the law. It would establish committees to process these cases in individual communities and determine who will continue on this path to legality, and who will be sent home. Congress must define understandable, clear, objective legal standards that will be applied equally during this process. While this process is ongoing, those here outside the law will be granted Temporary Legal Status for a certain, limited period of time until all have had the opportunity to apply and appear in front of committees.

Applicants must first pass a criminal background check, and then the local committees will assess applications based on family and community ties, and ability to support oneself via employment without the assistance of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other entitlement programs.

The government will rigorously enforce a requirement that all individuals seeking this path to legality must be able to prove that they can independently pay for private health insurance. If an individual cannot prove this, they will lose the ability to stay in the United States.

Furthermore, proficiency in English within a certain number of years, similar to the requirement for naturalization, will be required for anyone who seeks continued legal status in the United States.

Once an applicant has been granted the right to obtain legal status, he or she will have to pay a penalty of at least $5,000.

Moving forward, those who receive this status will have to prove on a regular basis that they can support themselves without entitlement programs and pay for health insurance or else risk the ability to stay in the country.”

What you’re saying is correct and I think a lot of Newt’s supporters already know it. They support him just as some did Perry because they want another amnesty.

One thing which should be noted, just in today's recent posts from the Washington Post and the Miami Herald, both headlines are using the term immigration.

This is not an issue of immigration. This is an issue of illegal immigration, two different things.

No politician with this position on immigration can ever win a GOP primary.

You are incorrect about the definition of Amnesty Kabar....Amnesty is citizenship when it relates to the immigration issue. Newt opposes Amnesty for illegals.

We’ve had work visas etc. for years and years where they come here to work and then go home....it was never considered Amnesty because it isn’t.

Newt has said their must be stiff penalities for those who break the laws which will be newly established....the current laws aren’t and cannot be enforced without streamlingin and changin it’s outdated model. Newt wants to do that....and so do those who are trying to change the immigration system and bring it into this century of operation where it’s effective.

There isn’t an American who is familiar with the immigration laws who don’t want to see them changed to fit what we’re dealing with now....it’s an antique uniforceable system as it now stands.

If there's a "stalemate" it's because democrats like Dick Durbin keep pushing amnesties like the Dream Act. The last thing we need are so-called Republicans like Gingrich agreeing and giving the democrats millions of new voters.

THE REAL NEWT GINGRICH!
If you’re a Newt supporter, let me hear your FACTUAL refutation of Jack’s riveting 30 minute presentation at the link below...and don’t come back with some garbage about “those Birchers.”
Those crazy old Birchers have been TRYING to tell you where we were headed for 50+ years and all they got was smeared and made “radioactive” by the same FRINGE MEDIA that remains in the tank for Obozo BECAUSE HE’S IMPLEMENTING THEIR STATIST AGENDA! Most of those we tried to warn about what was coming LAUGHED. Most of them have STOPPED LAUGHING – but they’re STILL sitting on their asses.

Are there any questions concerning the veracity or political orientation of the media or where we’re going to wind up unless more folks get busy?

Didn’t think so!

Well certainly those who have a vested interest will want amnesty....but they may just find they have no choice but to agree to being "legal" only and without the "perks" they think they're entitlted to because they are here. Did they think coming here and breaking ourlaws would not be without penality. Bottom line they must accept the deal as stated or go home and file for legal citizenship...I really like that idea...and it is doable.

You're right, starting with the Jordan Commission recommendations, not more mass amnesties.

We went through this in 2007 with Bush pushing the same scheme and the overwhelming majority of the country said no. Why are you trying to force this again?

I don’t see it your way....I think Newt’s plan is workable and of course there will be those who will protest and object from the libeeral democrates....unfortunately there are those of the republicans, as we see here, who will join the democrates in doing just that....thus the stalemate will continue.

“Well, after actually watching what Newt said, I think those that jumped on him for that here were not listening.”

You are correct.

Just remember that many of those attacking Newt are just staunch Cain supporters. A few others are Perry supporters. Many others are Obama supporters. A few others are just uninformed, short sighted, influenced by the media people. They are the ones that need us to inform them of the truth. We can just ignore the others.

Christie is TWO Newts. Newt is portly, Christie is morbidly obese.

Not a factor, IMHO.

Newt’s physique makes me think of Churchill.

Because there is no automatic citizenship given in Newt’s purposals.....at the very least it opens the door to get illegal immigration issues back on the front burner and debated and settled once and for all...especialy that of securing our borders and ealing headon with those who are here....that’s why.

The full sentence: ‘Let’s be humane in enforcing the law.’ They seem to totally miss the ENFORCING THE LAW part.

We're humane and then some at Gitmo.

Humane, when coming from our government means coddling and pandering.

No more. Get the cattle cars.

There is no way Reagan would get positive comments were he running today. Funny really.

Even Ronald Reagan got wrong it on amnesty. There were many who did not support his position.
