At the top of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich is poised for what some call the Perry Plunge for supporting part of the pro-immigrant DREAM Act.
Like former frontrunner Rick Perry, Gingrich became a target of criticism among fellow Republicans at Tuesday nights nationally televised debate for saying that some people should be allowed to stay in the United States even if theyre here illegally.
(snip)
Gingrichs comments were quickly blasted on conservative websites like Free Republic. The outrage with Gingrich underscored the danger of having a soft line on immigration as well as the tenuousness of leading the Republican field.

The one on the right looks like Roger Ebert before he got sick.
Well, after actually watching what Newt said, I think those that jumped on him for that here were not listening.
No, we were listening.
It means Gingrich is unrepentant for his prior support of comprehensive immigration reform in the same way that Romney is unrepentant for Romneycare.
I’m not trying to be rude, nor do I personally think it should be an issue, BUT has anyone discussed Newt’s electability based on his weight? The media was all over Chris Christie for being a possible over-weight candidate and Newt looked pretty big from the side at the last debate... Yet I haven’t heard/seen anything from the media on the issue as he has started to emerge as a front runner.
This guy just can't seem to help himself from doing and saying absolutely idiotic things.
I guess he's taking a cue from Romney and sticking to his guns on his views of Amnesty for Illegals. As a historian, you'd think he'd analyze how well this is working out for Romney. Newt, you putz!
I have heard that today Ronald Reagan could not get elected and after reading a lot of the posts here I believe it.

Before anyone berates Newt’s “Immigration Plan”, they need to read it. Then ask themselves what other candidate has given as much thought to the problem? My initial disappointment changed 180 degrees. Newt is thinking in the right direction.
They never do it’s all about taking down everyone but thier own candidate....beyond foolish...and the liberals win.
What exactly did Newt say that you think is so anti- conservative in regards to immigration?
Man there is lots of anti-Newt, Perry, and Romney stuff all over FR. Makes my head spin. There is no way Reagan would get positive comments were he running today. Funny really.
Newt’s right on immigration.
Do you really think Newt Gingrich didn’t plan this to be brought up at just this time in his campaign? Some just refuse to see that Newt planned this and certainly willing to let his stance on immigration be heard and understood despite the critics...and that at this time.
“I was really getting excited about Newt, and was willing to overlook his views on AGW (which he’s been turning away from), and now he goes and does this.”
I had the same feeling. Dishonest pro-illegal pandering with perryesque doubling-down.
He just don’t get it. We have seen this before. It is always a lie: Enforcement never comes, only amnesty.
Reagan pushed first amnesty, but then people believed that there is enforcement. Resulting document-fraud and mass-amnesty should teach a lesson. Beltway has no intension for any enforcement.
Besides, as a separate strategic issue: Mass-amnesty would flood the country and voting booths with marxists leftists permanently terminating any conservative influence on this country. Why any conservative would want this is beyond me. Why not just simply surrender, join ACORN and let them run the country?
I believe so too...if one really looks at the details and Newt's willingness to address the issue head on...and he's asked for our involvement. Not just to agree or not but to show him where theri might be a better way or adjustments needed.
Too bad that people will still prevent this issue from at least getting off the ground and acted, becuase there will never be a deportation of those here in mass. Not going to happen..Aclu is already in fighting mode as are other powerful groups.
Bingo
The blue one next to the fish.
I find that to be the case 99 times out of 100.
Anyone remember the Democrat's ad with Newt saying "Social Security will wither on the vine..." and then heard to what he said in context?
Yep...Free Republic is a war zone.....not exactly encouraging dialogue other than throwing dirt bombs....the invasion of illegals isn't only in our country.
He'd be considered a RINO.
This term should actually be reserved for people like Sen. Olympia Snowe and others who accept virtually none of the GOP program and usually vote with the Dems. Instead, all "RINO" means now is people who disagree with the self-proclaimed "true conservatives," who are the "Exhibit A" used by the press to prove how wacky we are in the GOP.
