Opponents of Alabama’s immigration law say it causes fear, anxiety
Boston Herald ^ | November 24, 2011 | Uriel J. Garcia / Cronkite News Service

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — If the goal of state immigration laws was to make life so uncomfortable for illegal immigrants that they leave on their own, it may be working under HB 56 in Alabama.

"HB 56 has caused a chain reaction that prevents Hispanics from living with dignity," said Trini Garcia, who came to Alabama on a tourist visa 15 years ago and stayed after it expired.

"I never thought Arizona’s law was going to come to Alabama," she said. "Now it’s created chaos among Hispanics in Alabama."

Garcia was one of several speakers Monday at a hearing called by congressional Democrats who traveled to Birmingham to rally opposition to HB 56, the state anti-immigration law patterned after Arizona’s SB 1070.

Even though parts of the Alabama law have been blocked by courts — including a temporary restraining order issued against one provision Wednesday by a federal district judge — Garcia continues to worry about the law, which took effect Sept. 29.

HB 56 has caused her family to hide in their Tuscaloosa home and only go out if necessary, she said. The family has cut off all extracurricular activities for her two American-born sons.

"Now I don’t go out and feel like a prisoner in my house," she said. "We just don’t want to stand out."

The family needs to renew the state-required registration on its mobile home, and the license plates on their cars are set to expire next year. If the law is still in place by then, they will not be able to drive, she said.

"If we can’t get to work, we’re going to have to leave," Garcia said.

That’s fine with supporters of the law.

The 600,000 documented Hispanic/Latino gang members cause fear and anxiety as well.

“If we can’t get to work, we’re going to have to leave,” Garcia said.

Thanks, Ms. Garcia, for proving that Alabama’s new law WORKS. All we have to do is stop coddling you illegals, and you’ll leave! Awesome!

As reported by their Fellow Travelers. In a united effort to repeal Alabama’s anti-immigrant law, Black, white and Latino members of Congress, faith, labor, community and civil rights leaders kicked off a state and national campaign Nov. 21 in Birmingham.

The campaign, One Family, One Alabama, welcomed a congressional delegation earlier in the day led by Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., one of the most vocal proponents for immigration reform in Washington. In the last couple of weeks religious leaders and Black, labor and civil rights leaders have visited Alabama to denounce the law. They’re also calling for statewide unity to repeal the measure.

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) held a Nov. 21 vigil at Lafayette Square in Washington D.C. as part of a nationwide effort to show solidarity with Alabamians who oppose the measure.

(Hosea 7:1-2) The thief comes inside. The Bandits raid outside. Now their exploits surround and encircle them.

Foreigners sap his strength, but he does not realize it. His hair is sprinkled with gray, but he does not notice.

The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour. Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up.

With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction.

So, installing fear and anxiety amongst criminals is bad?

BINGO. We have to worry about losing our nation every single day. They can now “join the crowd”. This law was a brilliant Coup’d’etat by Kobach. Read Blackburn’s ruling.

Cry me a river. How about the fear of the American citizen who can’t find even a low-wage job, thanks to these invaders? How about their financial chaos? The Lamestream can dredge up as many of these “sob stories” all they want and Americans, TRUE Americans, will not care one whit.

The rallying cry of Americans who love this country and care about the rule of law is if you’re an illegal alien, YOU DON’T BELONG HERE ... Don’t let the doorknob hit you in the butt on your way out!

15 years...so I guess Newt is ready to force them back to Mexico? FAT CHANCE. So where’s Newt’s cut-off? Is it 25 years, 15 years, 5 years, 5 months?

At least with Perry we know he’ll get them through college...

“My wife is a Mexican National...”

Smartest thing a guy can do is marry someone not born in this country, and not contaminated by our feminist-driven culture.

Anyone who breaks the law SHOULD suffer a little “fear and axiety”.

I bet the APA (American Psychological Ass.) will create a mental disease from this fear and chaos it causes in illegal aliens, give it a name, and use it to prescribe more meds and lobby Congress to stop this disease.

Its supposed to cause fear and anxiety if you are an illegal alien. Illegal meaning you are not supposed to be here and if caught will be kicked out.

Absolutely! But to be sure she is an entirely self made person with a steel spine.

No one in her family had gone to High school and she was determine to put herself through Engineering School.

She is a real feminist who has never played the "victim" card. Just smart and driven.

She is a true conservative: wants to be judged by her achievements and not her "good intentions" or race.

As I understand it, the Alabama unemployment rate is seeing a dramatic drop.

Yes it did.

When Wayne Farms went looking for new workers to process the chickens people lined up around the block.

Jefferson County saw a 1% drop in unemployment.

Imagine if all the construction workers left too.
