Newt Gingrich may face backlash in Iowa over immigration comments

DES MOINES — Having just taken his place at the front of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich now faces a potential backlash from conservative activists here in Iowa over an immigration proposal that he called “humane” but that his opponents quickly decried as providing “amnesty.”

The former House speaker appears to have alienated some of the conservatives who had warmed to his candidacy by saying Tuesday in a candidates debate that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.

Trebb, the US is not a theocracy devoted to God, nor is it led by Jewish kings or prists.

“Do you have your rights because you are a citizen or because ALL MEN are CREATED Equal and ENDOWED by their creator?”

All men are created equal; however, those who are not citizens of a country cannot partake of all of its allowances. Laws are made to be followed, not broken.

Lincoln’s words do not defend anything you appear to be claiming.

” - - - that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.”

How are you going to pay for it NEWT? The estimate is 2.6 Trillion Dollars in entitlements alone.

Stop promising to burn our meney! WE are TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY!

FR refrain today is Newt is a liberal.

I mean what are they snorting?

Guy has 94 lifetime ACU including some votes speaker has to vote opposite or abstain for protocol and still 94

that is like a 1 percentile conservative for House members...especially in his era and

and do any of these kids here even know what the Contract for America said..and he got almost half of it passed..not easy

oddly enough just tonight while in the tub I pulled out my history(written by LS) book to read up on it along with some procedural changes Newt made that are hardly the mark of a liberal

when folks call Newt a liberal you know they are not well informed or extremely Cain drunk

Newt peaked. Face it. He stepped in it big time, like Perry did on illegal immmigration earlier. On the downslope now.

Inclinación por Gingrich bajaría (El Economista 25 Nov. 2011)

English Machine Translation: "Des Moines. After the head position preference in the presidential campaign Republican, Newt Gingrich is now facing a possible backlash from conservative activists, after proposing an immigration reform that he called "humane", but quickly denounced his opponents as an "amnesty.""

I have said it before, and I will say it again:

I get sick and tired of “Conservatives” making friends out to be enemies in an effort to pump their particular candidate of choice in a given election.

Newt and Perry are fine Conservatives with Conseravtive records. They are not the enemy.

“...but quickly denounced his opponents as an “amnesty.”

Of course they did! That’s what politicians do.

And, so have many here on FR!

Do you people know what anmesty is, and how Newt’s program is different?

BTW, it is in no way similar to Bush’s comprehensive immigration reform.

Gingrich is NOT a dumb man. This was not a “slip”. He brought up this issue on purpose. Why is that? Any theories out there?

I believe the "electable" key to this issue is a solid plan for securing the border and stopping all the free candy we give away. Some of the deportation "chatter" here seems almost Orwellian in it's lack of compassion for the human condition and I do not believe it is a majority view in the electorate. I'm clearly not for blanket amnesty but a hawkish deportation approach to this issue will NOT be pretty and it will NOT serve as a badge of honor for the conservative movement. When you basically invite them in with benefits, jobs, education, healthcare, etc., and then sit back and make the assumption that they are common criminals like someone who stole your car I would say you have an intellectually shallow view of the subject. And this is not to say that there are not horrific criminals that have entered this country illegally, there are. But the enemy is not the man who crosses the border in search of a better life, it is the benefit package we offer him that is a thousand times more powerful than the little sign at the border that says "don't cross." I'm one of the most radically conservative people I know, but to call anyone that doesn't support some kind of radical deportation policy a RINO seems a bit intellectually shallow to me. Who exactly are the leading conservatives on this subject? Who holds the PURE policy view that all "true conservatives" should follow? Who has the "perfect answer?"

The issue is an emotional one for Americans. Newt has difficulty understanding human emotion. Masters don't care how their slaves “feel” and fascists are always trying to defy human nature or at least pretend that they can control it..self proclaimed G-ds never learn. Being territorial will not be “learned” ,”forced” or “progressed” out of humans, it's a natural instinct...like mating.

He is backing off because his lesson in “logic” to the people is not working. The global pols are pushing a lawless human cattle mixing concept that is inhuman and unatural.

I regret that our “leaders” are fascist morons that have allowed an illegal soft invasion of this country.

Except it's a lot less fun. :-P

You raise some good points many with which I agree. Newt is backing off a bit but unfortunately for him, he can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.

There is no perfect candidate and I do not expect to agree with any on all issues. But the amnesty issue is a big one, one that Newt knows will cost him big with conservatives. I think he also knows or at least senses the level of distrust we have for Mitt. Given that, he thinks he can try to appeal to the Hispanic community and other pro-ILLEGAL alien groups/people and still get our vote. He won't be getting mine.

Yes we do, but apparently you don't.

Amnesty is giving legal status to ILLEGAL aliens who have broken our immigration laws. And that is exactly what Newt proposes to do.

This is a situation created by Democrats and their policies of sanctuary cities and benefits (as you point out). And now the Democrats and the MSM demand the Republicans solve this issue? And Republicans jump onboard and agree? This is very typical. Any plan to resolve this issue is useless unless step 1 - controlling the border is solved FIRST. And the GOP is called intellectually shallow? It’s the Democrats who are holding the border hostage to some sort of promise for resolving a problem THEY created. Insisting this problem be resolved before we tighten the border so we can feel better about ourselves and stroke our collective guilt is letting oneself get manipulated and suckered again. You don’t negotiate with hostage takers. You solve problem 1 first and then you talk about problem 2. You don’t jump to problem 2 or you become just as guilty with another “free candy” give away promise which will just continue drawing people here regardless of border conditions. Call it “tough love” but I’m against creating another situation which draws people into breaking our laws.

I agree...its the hysteria. It reminds me of the the childish yelling in a grade school schoolyard.

And the view of the past conservatives is through rose colored glasses. I am getting tired of them using Reagan as an example when it fits their current views, but quietly omitting him when his behaviors don’t fit.

I agree with your reasoned post.

The only thing that will get Obama re-elected is the hysteria for a “perfect” conservative. And it looks ironically more on FR that is someone who “says” all the right conservative “cliches” over and over. On immigration that means to say over and over “we don’t want illegals here” with no further point by point plan explaining how this would happen and then attacking anyone who has a plan, not even on the merits of their plan but just yelling “ that’s amnesty”.

the irony is that this is becomming more an appeal to the emotions ..kind of what the left does.

I agree. I wish that was the hard line the candidates took. I would prefer hearing something like:

1) Secure the border.

2) Dismantle the "free ride"

3) To be discussed/debated/etc., when 1 & 2 have been accomplished!

“Cain WILL NOT be the nominee. Keep repeating that until it sinks in.”

Just so you know, unless the GOP party bosses wise up they run the real risk of handing the election over to obama or some other Dem.

A good many conservatives are not interested in taking the slow road to hell. A presidential election is only one way to make this country right again.

Keep repeating THAT until it sinks in.

No quarrel with any of that.

None of it though, so far as I can tell, changes the plain fact that Herman Cain isn't going to be the GOP nominee.
