DES MOINES Having just taken his place at the front of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich now faces a potential backlash from conservative activists here in Iowa over an immigration proposal that he called humane but that his opponents quickly decried as providing amnesty.
The former House speaker appears to have alienated some of the conservatives who had warmed to his candidacy by saying Tuesday in a candidates debate that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.

That border is a sieve, and terrorists are using it as a transit point.
Just because they're not blowing us up doesn't mean they're not there.
So ? what your saying is give the foreigners who came here illegally a free pass on breaking the laws ? ...
We are at war with a people who are not happy with killing our soldiers, they want to annihilate our entire population. OTMs include Saudis, Iranians, Iraqis and many other people who pose a tangible threat and one that we foolishly ignore.
I sincerely hope I am proven wrong but I firmly believe that the next major terrorist attack that occurs on American soil will be a direct result of our having not closed our porous borders.
Yes, we call them “OTMs” (Other Than Mexican)”. That would have been a good point with Blitz asked if there was an issue on the horizon they had not talked about which concerned them about national security. Of course, the fact North Korea never got mention kind of pissed me off, too.
Newt is clueless on enforcing laws already on the books. Amnesty was tried and failed to discourage illegals. Theyre not going to go to the back of the line when there is zero encouragement to do so. Newts plan is nothing more than the same closet amnesty Bush proposed....empty words with ZERO enforcement. A couple of raids, a trip to the border for a quick photo op, and its back to BUSINESS AS USUAL.

WE HAD a candidate back in 2008 who actually did this, but, no one wanted to listen to him, and he was relegated to the bottom, Duncan Hunter.

I’m no fan of Amnesty, definitely don’t want to give citizenship and favor mandatory e-verify...but would you vote for this man if you heard this answer....?
Never said that and don't want that. Just pointing out the reality that politicians have spent decades letting the water run over the dam and not all of it can be pumped back. If a child was brought over at 2 years of age, and has been living "as if an American" for 20 years, is that person a lawbreaker? I work with security clearances and often find young men and women of Hispanic origin getting questioned for claiming their parents as naturalized citizens. Many have been told all their lives they are legal and then a special circumstance (security investigation) proves that their parents lied to them.
I advocate sealing the borders, getting rid of the most obvious scum, and doing an ordered look at what's left.
Yep. Not sure I care for Newt as a VP pick anymore either.
If you look at the decades long policies that we had to get cheap labor at the expense of a flood of illegals and the refusal to revamp our immigration policy to meet this demand by our corporations you will see illegals were ‘encouraged” to come.
Moreover, if you look at the factors economically and other wise that some posters have described of what it would take to “deport” millions of people, you will see why this is not a “realistic” solution.
To present comparisons to WWII is disingenuous at best.
Yes, we CAN deal with this situation, but just screaming about “deport them all” is not a realistic response. Actually the whole discussion about deportation is a moot point until we secure the border and revamp our immigration system.
Good luck with a reasoned response.
The hysteria about illegals instead of a rational policy will be the undoing of the conservatives.
Thanks - I can't believe how nuts some otherwise astute folks get over an issue. They let it eat at them instead of dealing rationally.
At least it's been 20 minutes or so and none have further flamed or called me bad names - perhaps they'll actually try to visualize the logistics of what they want.
I'm not for amnesty, but I don't see how we can get around letting a few million off the hook. Maybe I'll get some plans from the others that don't involve armed gangs "purifying" the place...
At any rate, you are correct, we need to clarify a good policy/strategy, then actually carry it out. I attended a war planners course a few years back and policy/strategy drive everything or you get the chaos that Obama's administration has given us.
” You know you suck on immigration when NumbersUSA ranks you lower than uber-liberal Barbara Boxer. “
LOL....good catch, South 40.
Newt is a fraud on a number of issues, and he has more personal baggage than Louis Vitton : )
Rational thinking.
In addition to his powerful intellect, Newt has a problem with candor.
If he was a calculating phony - as some believe- he would never have made the boo-boos that are repeated ad nauseum on FR. It seems to me he has ventured into unfamiliar territory - such as Global Warming - and listened to ‘experts’ who really did have an agenda.
Many of us have been ‘taken in’ by advocates - simply because we are generally trusting and sincere. Judging others as we judge ourselves.
Have wiped many omelettes of my face....felt foolish - even though I consider myself semi-intelligent.
